Charlie's Laundry Powder

atla0401008Powder_detail.jpgSharilyn of Lovely Design just sent us a glowing recommendation of Charlie's Laundry Powder, an environmentally friendly detergent which she currently trusts for all her baby's cloth washing needs.

The blend of biodegradable coconut-based detergents and Green River washing soda makes for a hypoallergenic and biodegradable washing solution that claims to clean your washing mean of all the residue from other typical detergents with just a tablespoon per load. This detergent even comes with a warranty: "If you're not completely satisfied, Sutherland Products will, but not gladly, refund the buyer's purchase price." We'll admit, we're apt to try it not just because our friend's recommendation, but also for the old timey graphics...

It also kills roaches. Really. They used to make that claim on the packaging, and then had to stop or else they would have to register the product as insecticide.

I've always wondered on here if anyone uses Shaklee brand stuff? I love it! Not only is all their cleaning stuff great, but I swear by their vitamins!

I use Charlie's Soap for my baby's cloth diapers, but since it worked so well on these very soiled items, I decided to use it for everything else. Delivery is free and it's nice to only need to use one detergent for the whole family's clothes. Highly recommended!

This company also has a great story behind it, as I recall it: family owned textile mill that had a son formulate a soap to clean the machinery. When employees started making off with the soap for home use, they turned it into a product which ultimately saved the business when the textile industry moved overseas. I use it and have been very satisfied. My favorite part of the bag is the "Fragrance-free: If you want a pretty smell, go pick a flower". Great product and I like that I am supporting a small business.

We imported 4 bottles of the stuff (we live in Ottawa, Canada) and saved SOOO much money on doing laundry - it lasted over a year, and that's WITH cloth diapers.

So glad to see you guys posted about this product. I first saw it on drugstore.com website but was hesitant to buy without a review by consumers. I'll definitely try it now.

How about the company's practices? Sustainable? I imagine they would be, considering their concern for the product itself. But I hate to assume anything these days.

It certainly sounds intriguing to try something everyone claims is terrific, but I have a hard time switching from locally-made product whose container I can refill at my co-op.

I am so excited to see this on your site. I ordered some of this last week after reading positive review after positive review. I should be getting my 3lb bag tomorrow based on what the tracking says.

I am soooooo excited to use it! I will definitely post back after I give it a whirl.

Want to know what clean clothes are supposed to smell like? Use Charlie's Soap! I've been using this stuff over four years, and have long forgotten about fabric softeners, dryer sheets, and other laundry additives. I can't say enough about it. I'll never use anything else.

I'm going to order some right now! The free shipping is awesome and its really nice to see so many good reviews on such a green product. Anyone ever used their All-purpose cleaner? I think I'll try that as well..

I know it says hypoallergenic, but does anyone use this product who has sensitive skin? I think I'm allergic to the Tide for Cold Water that we're using (along with every type of lotion and soap that doesn't say "baby" on the packaging)... I constantly itch if I don't take Zyrtec. So I'm in the market for a new laundry detergent, and this one sounds great. Any experiences to share?

Okay, 80 loads / $11.00 for the 3 pound bag = 14 cents per load. Thats crazy!

I think it's the soda that kills roaches--my mom told me to get borax and mix with a little powdered sugar and put into empty votive tins and hide them under things my cats couldn't get to so I wouldn't get roaches when I lived in NYC. I didn't have them, which is GOOD!

No, the roach killer is boric acid, not borax. Borax is a cleansing agent.

Okay, I take it back. I hadn't read the first comment, and then googled it. I guess borax does kill roaches, too. Sorry!

No, I take that back. Borax kills ants; boric acid kills roaches. Charlie's, I don't know.
