Here's a blast from the past: Hoover vacuums has reissued a modern day version of their 1954 floating canister carpet cleaner! Using exhaust air, the spherical little space-age inspired sputnik of cleaning utility literally floats on a cushion of air, and Hoover has brought the Constellation back with improved features like a HEPA filtration and twelve foot hose with telescoping handle.

Good looking, good price, good reviews. We have a winner.

I had one of these when they were first introduced and I adored it! It floated around me effortlessly and sucked up the nasty like a bandit. Could be stored anywhere and was just FRIENDLY looking, simple to use and no other vacuum has ever made such an impression on me.
There was a filter cloth held in place by a circle of wire that was a major pain to change, I assume they have fixed that. Only complaint I had.
The new IMPROVED one? I will be one of the first buyers.

My mom got one of the originals in the 1950's, and it still works!

I bought an original 195Os model--mine was coral & gray--at Goodwill when I was a penniless college student, simply because I loved its futuristic looks. I wasn't into cleaning, my dorm room didn't even have a carpet and the place was so small there wasn't noplace to put the thing, so this baby had to sit out all the time, but that was fine because it was so beautiful that it functioned as an art object rather than an appliance, anyway. It was by far the coolest thing in the room. At home, my family owned a stolid, no-nonsense Filter Queen that must have been made out of cast iron, with hammered-finish gunmetal gray paint & ugly brown trim, so coming across a gleaming, candy-colored example of this was a huge find for me. And for $15? How could I go wrong?
Anyway, I had no idea that Hoover had brought this baby back, but it was a brilliant move, and I'm getting one ASAP.

Anything is better than their uprights which break ever time I go over anything larger than a spec of dust. Vacuums are made like Pez dispensers these day.

icenet333: agreed...most of the current selection of vacuums are over accessorized and made of very cheap plastic that I doubt will be used by another generation like those classic Hoovers.

My Mom had one too - in pink and we still had that thing up until the late 90's or so, it was still working just fine, but sadly, it didn't look too hot by that point as it had been relegated to the garage and even had a dent in it too.
I had heard that these were being reissued I think a year or so ago if I recall right.

i want one!!! my vintage rainbow just croaked, and i've been looking for a vacuum that would work on my wood floors and my shag rugs equally well....most vacuums i've tried work great on carpet, not so great on bare floors--they just shoot the dust/dirt everywhere and it is painful on the ankles. glad to see this one has good reviews for both wood and carpet.

I'll be in the market for a vacuum in two months. Been looking at the Hoover Mach 5 Multi-Chamber Cyclonic Bagless Vacuum (http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=5544971).
Tough... same price, I know the Mach 5 will suck up dirt well since it's pretty much the same design as the Dyson I'm currently usuing, but the Constellation is just so spiffy!

Wouldn't that be a small spherical Hoovercraft? I used to have one, but it seemed to expend so much energy floating, that there wasn't enough left to inhale much. It would also drift away and bang into furniture and walls. Maybe it has improved, but I think I"ll stick with my Kenmore canister.

Read the reviews, very positive. Still on the fence, I guess I'll revisit this when I'm actually going to purchase a vacuum. Either way, Hoover wins since my choices are between the Mach 5 and this one. Even came up with some lyrics... modeled after Snoop's song.
Hoooooooooveeerâ¦.

When your Bosch ainât cutting it
Dump it like itâs hot
