Keep the Bedroom Healthy: Flip your Mattress

020808_mattress.jpg

Maybe you can't redo your whole bedroom this weekend. But you can do a thing or two to make it feel clean and light, like flipping your mattress. Technically you're supposed to flip or turn your mattress with the seasons to keep it healthy, but it's a job for 2 and is easy to put off. So this is your (Valentine's Day) weekend assignment. Tips after the jump:

Even if you just flip or turn your mattress (some mattresses are no-flip so doublecheck before you start a flippin) during bedroom month at Apartment Therapy, it's a start. So read up on whether it's time for a mattress change or just time for a flip. Also you may want to make sure that your mattress hasn't expired!

SydneyBristow: our mattress is also a no-flip model too. But we noticed by just spinning it around 180 degrees, we get a more even wear from it. And I totally second that mattress topper/featherbed idea...it took our bed from great to unbelievably heavenly.

What should you do to maintain a pillowtop mattress as I can't flip it?

... other than turning it, or adding a featherbed (allergies!)

My pillowtop is on both sides...can you remove the pillowtop (I know on some you can).

This can be a one person job for someone who is crazy--like me! I managed to do it 2 weeks ago by some creative head positioning and turning. I have a queen, too, so it wasn't some measly twin!

Does anyone have anything to say about Memory mattresses? They have just come into the shops where I live. Flipping the mattress always gives me a great sleep.
