Room Fresheners

Although freshly cut flowers or aromatic cooking in the kitchen are always my preferred means to a pleasant smelling home, sometimes a little fragrant help from a room freshener is an easy solution to brighten the interior bouquet. The good folks at Method have introduced the karim rashid designed Aroma Capsule, a minimal chic solution which I admit to purchasing solely because I found its form irresistible on first glance. Its almost a bonus that the grapefruit-pear scent is fragrantly agreeable, and the 3-setting mini fan activates in intervals to release the eucalyptus + mint, cool water, grapefruit + pear, lavender + lemongrass, sweet water, or vanilla + apple nose-friendly concoctions.

On a related note, how about these two Japanese brand air fresheners I spied at Little Tokyo grocery, Mitsuwa Marketplace this weekend:

The Cube Sai Air Refreshener is technically a car accessory, thus the nod to the iconic fuzzy dice, but with its dcor friendly colours and mild odour, its easily appropriated for home use (I find Japanese air fresheners to be less invasive than most American brands). But if you fancy the small army of kawaii-shaped Kobayashi brand air fresheners, youll have to make your way to Mitsuwa...the little fellas dont seem to be available domestically except thru the Japanese retailer.

I picked up the plug-in version (the pill?) of the Method in the Grapefruit Pear. I was hoping it would be more grapefruity, much like the discontinued Glade "Grapefruit Delight". It doesn't have that tart edge that I really liked in the Glade. Which might be a good thing for others. The plug-in leaks, I'm not sure why, but it drips off the bottom of the glass container. Maybe not evaporating as fast as it's being drawn up?

I talked to Method on the phone, and at that time, the Grapefruit-Pear was the least best selling, and may be discontinued.

The best bets I've found for fragrance, but they aren't as good looking as the Method, are the OUST portable fan unit and the oil refills from Yankee Candle (at Bed Bath and Beyond).

OUST has only three fragrances, Outdoor, Citrus, and Floral. The Outdoor is my favorite. It smells like fresh night air. The Citrus, a close second. Floral is kind of weird and I go back and forth between liking and not liking it so much.

The Yankee Candle refills fit in Air Wick and Glade. Work best in Air Wick, can be used with the nightlight oil holder. They, of course, have their own diffuser, which looks better.

Here's Lilac: http://tinyurl.com/lm6u7

It's stronger than a lot of the store brands, which I like. In a studio, the fragrance has too much area to cover, and light fragrances disappear. I really love florals, so the Lilac and the Rose are my favorites. I haven't tried any others, I don't need to, when I've found what I love. I only wish they were available everywhere, so I wouldn't have to make the trip to BBB.

I bought the blue one at Target, also because of its looks, more than its smell. I must admit though, that I was underwhelmed. Granted, it was used in my living room which isn't tiny, but I still barely noticed it if I was further than 3 feet away. Maybe you could use them en masse as an art piece, but beyond that, they're a letdown.

Wow, all this writing for an air freshener...

ATL! Not just an air freshener! One of our senses! Look at the pictures and products on this site. They appeal to sight, touch, and over in The Kitchen, we have taste (and scent). People spend gazillions on their home electronics, for sight, sound. Sheets that "feel good", "the touch, the feel, of cotton"

What about smell????? For the home. Not perfumes or bath items, but they are part of it. Okay, you get a comfy sofa, a spectalar looking coffee table, and they are always there, always comfy and attractive. But scent, only when you run around after bathing? After cooking? After shaving?

I want to be smacked upside the head with lilac scent. As strong a statement in fragrance as others might consider for their stereo system, their coffee table, their comfy sofa.

And I especially like TRUE scents, things that smell like whatever they say on the label, not some distorted version (like vanilla that smells more like coconut, ewwww).

I just purchased the Method Pill air freshener in the lavendar/lemongrass scent. I've never liked air fresheners, because they seemed so toxic and chemical laden, but since these are by Method, I was up to try it! If you're looking for one air freshener that will freshen your entire house (mine's around 3000 sq. ft), then this one is for you! Personally, I just wanted a light scent in the guest bathroom. It ended up being a strong scent in the bathroom and a light scent everywhere else. Maybe I'll try the capsule... might be more subtle, and there are no other brands I'd want to use!
