Earlier today, Beth took a look at a range of glass collections. We're always curious, how does a collection start? We took a closer look at one of the displays, the beautiful glass collection that Dave and Melanie recently shared on the Apartment Therapy group pool and in their entry in Fall Colours contest...
Often, a collection begins haphazardly, with something you love. Then you see a display somewhere that sticks in your mind. And something ignites. In this case, they started with the striking red vase in the center, a legacy from a stylin' grandma, and inspired by a display at the Parker in Palm Springs, the collection grew through visits to thrift stores and flea markets.
Take a look around your own home. What do you collect? If you'd have asked us, we would've scoffed, "I'm so not a collector". But...when I was asked to pull together photographs of things that I love in my home, I realized that that wasn't true. They may not be displayed together but it turns out that I have a love of sculptures of body parts and all things Victorian and gothic.
What about you? What do you love and collect, consciously or unconsciously? How are they displayed in your home?

My biggest collection is of Christmas ornaments- we always received them as gifts, so they're sentimental, but if I'm somewhere where a souvenir would be nice- I look for ornaments. My favorite are a set of fabric & beaded ornaments I collected when studying abroad in Europe.
Or course, my "year round" collection is of vintage WW2 posters- it started with one, and ballooned. The first ones were all collected from the D-DAY museum over several spring break mission trips to New Orleans after Katrina, but I still buy them now too!

I'm really on the fence about this whole AT Collection Theme Month.
On the one hand, I have a collection of holiday ornaments that is special and amazing if I say so myself. I also have a collection of crystal, of horse art, of desert art, and of curio boxes. I also have a collection of furry felines (3 or more makes a collection, right?)
On the other hand, suggesting that people start collecting -- spending money to collect stuff that will in turn have it's own dust collection -- seems counter to one of the core AT principles: Don't collect stuff for stuff's sake, don't fill life with clutter, learn to separate emotional attachment to things from emotional attachments to people and places.
I feel a strange consumerist push for everyone to run out and acquire a collection, which is counter to a discussion about organically acquired mementos.

I have a collection of 50's,60's and 70's ceramics, which I store in a huge cupboard. From time to time I take out a piece and put it on display on the dining table or on a coffee table. That way I never grow bored of them.

I have a small collection of interesting creamers, and a small collection of clear glass containers in a variety of shapes. I'm trying not to let either expand too much, because it'll just mean more to clean. I also use the creamers to house my jewelry on my dresser, so at least they're a useful collection. I feel there's a fine line between classy collections and kitschy ones.

I have been collecting bottles since I was kid and I just started collecting Moroccan lanterns (I have a HUGE obsession with glass, apparently).
Speaking of glass, my husband and I have decided to go with an apothecary/alchemy/mad scientist theme in our new kitchen (just moved in over the weekend!) and we'd like to start collecting apothecary-type bottles for the ledge around the top of the cabinets.
I have a very small collection of Richard Franklin prints which I am trying to keep at a minimum since they are very large pieces.

Speaking for myself...I enjoy looking and reading about collections. I guess, maybe, others see it more as clutter...but I think it's fun. Even if devoting an entire month may be too much, keep featuring collections on occasion!

I keep Bitossi Italian pottery - but I have so much that I might need to consider paring my collection down a bit to just the pieces that I love.
