It's interesting to see they all chose somewhat neutral colors, and a few opted for really dark options. We like the idea of using a dark color on maybe one or two walls, but perhaps not the entire room. However, maybe a whole room actually will make a space feel bigger? Has anyone used a great color in a small space they'd recommend? Any tips? or is it really that "anything goes"...?
What brand of paint and color is that yellow in the top image? It seems to be cut off and I couldn't find it on the website.

White is about the worst wall "color" in a small space - White only really works in large-ish and open spaces.
My living room, hall and guest bathroom are all painted Benjamin Moore's "Black Bean Soup" (similar to the dark brown color in the article) - It's an amazing color that looks black until something black is against it - then it turns brown. It makes my white leather sectional and white flokati rug pop - but the walls seem far-far away. I use Blue and Orange as accents in the living room, Orange and Pink accents in the hall bath (white tile and fixtures), a square of Ocean Blue on the wall in the hallway above the credenza that "frames" my nautical prints, and walnut, elm burl & medium-brown wood furniture...

I've got a small studio apartment - less than 450 square feet. I just painted all the walls in the living/sleeping area with Benjamin Moore's Boudoir AF-190. It's a pinkish beige. I love it. You feel cocooned in soothing color, but there's still a zap of energy in the space thanks to the pink tones. The color has a distinctive personality but it doesn't overwhelm.
The few pieces of furniture I have are on the cooler side of the color spectrum. They're also "cold" in terms of design - modern lines, metal legs. The romantic, kind of old-fashioned color of the walls is a nice contrast - it warms up the furniture. Also, since the the walls are darker than the furniture, the walls seem to recede away making the space feel less cramped.
It was a pain to paint, but now I'm thrilled that I didn't just stick with the original linen white of the walls. Yay! to not giving into laziness this one time!

BrionyCat, the yellow is actually a little more on the green side in reality(bad scan sorry)- they listed it as "Fresh Curry 6254-2" from Porter Paints- hope that helps

I absolutely love this feature in this magazine--and the magazine itself is a treasure.
I found my beautiful dining room colour from an article they did in the fall.

I hate sweeping color comments like "white is about the worst 'color' for small spaces."

When I recently moved into my cozy 6'x8' bedroom in Manhattan, the previous occupant had painted the room a 'linen white' that had faded to a 'dirty-sock white' over time. With only one window in the room offering "natural light" (it faces a brick wall), I re-painted the walls using Benjamin Moore's 'Straw' and 'Pure Brilliant White' for the baseboards/door trim. The honey-toned yellow gives the room a warm ambiance that isn't overpowering, especially when paired with chocolate brown and slate blue accent colors.
