apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Coming in July: Green @ Home

greenATHome.gifNext month kicks off our second annual Green Month across our sites. Apartment Therapy, Ohdeedoh, Unplggd and, of course, Re-Nest will be tackling the big green monster and working towards solutions and inspiration (The Kitchn will be Grilling).

Being super aware of "green fatigue," "greenwashing" and "green overload," (See the great article in the NYTimes last Sunday: That Buzz in Your Ear May Be Green Noise) we wanted to do something different and useful...

Introducing Green @ Home....

Starting in a few weeks, we want to reach out to all of our readers to help put a face on what "green" means to you and what you've done about it. We want to meet you and share your "green moves" and "green frustrations" with the larger audience.

We also want to SEE where you live and what you've done.

To do this we're going to ask readers to submit photographs and text that shares their journey and solutions and puts a face on the green issue that we can all learn from. By the end of the month, we should have a million great ideas that we can all learn from.

To entice you, we've lined up a sponsor to reward every entrant that we post with a good, useful and valuable green gift.

We'll give you all the details by next week, but we want you to save the date and start thinking.

All of our editors are already getting started, so you can too!

Food for thought:

Green @ Home

A July giveaway to celebrate green sharing and crack the difficulty of how each of us makes a difference at home

A few of the questions we'll be asking:

What has inspired you?
What's your favorite green move/tip/idea?
What's your biggest green frustration?
What's your favorite resource, product or idea?

More details to follow.....

Re 'That Buzz in Your Ear May be Green Noise' article is a bit of a joke considering it's (concerned) comments from Carl Pope, the executive director of the Sierra Club.
Not so long ago I stayed at a Sierra Club lodge at Donner Pass, California and was completely horrified to see ALL waste being flung unceremoniously into the large garbage bins. When I asked the staff why they were not at the very least recycling glass and tin cans (and perhaps composting), the then 'head of the kitchen' stared at me for a while and laughed. He didn't even give me a proper response.
I planned on writing a letter to the Sierra Club about this but after conversation with several other staff there, I realised that I would be wasting my energy and a stamp.
