Ahoy! This week's Complex Love brings us to the Ala Moana Apartments in Costa Mesa, CA. Right off a busy street, this little oasis is straight outta The Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland...(continued)
Complex Love is a photographic celebration of Southern California's unique apartment architecture history. Live in or nearby an apartment complex of notable or unusual design? Please submit photos and information to la (at) apartmenttherapy (dot) com.
As you pass through the classic A-frame entrance, you walk over a wood plank "drawbridge" walkway that is over a small lagoon, complete with posts and chains, and even a lava rock waterfall fountain!
Once you're inside, there's this weird boardwalk area that houses the mailboxes, and also a series of faux portholes.
The ironwork railing around the perimeter is deliberately haphazard and quirky that is classic "tiki".
We also loved the clubhouse by the pool area.
We suspect the current paint job has been a recent update, but otherwise, most of the exterior mid-century touches seem in tact. It's nice to see that the complex appears pretty well preserved and is still operational today.
I love this!

This is awesome and I think I know where this is! (must do a drive by this weekend)- So great to see there are some of these still around. which reminds me that I saw there's a new Tiki design book coming out by Taschen- This place looks like it would be a blast to live in-
