Complex Love: Parkman Moorish Apartments

complex012508_0020.jpg
Complex Love is back after a long sabbatical, this time with a multi-unit courtyard apartment in Silver Lake (near Cafe Tropical, the famous local cuban bakery with almond cigars and mango cheese turnovers to die for) with a Moorish architectural style that reminds us that LA has always been about imagination.

Complex Love is a photographic celebration of Southern California's unique apartment architecture history. Live in or nearby an apartment complex of notable or unusual design? Please submit photos and information to la (at) apartmenttherapy (dot) com.

The 12 unit building was built in 1927, and is one of the few examples of Middle Eastern influenced fantasy architecture found in Silver Lake, alongside the Elevado de Castillo by Design Vidal and the Charles F. Whittlesey designed Loma Vista Place residence with Gaudi-inspired styling. We're hoping one day we get to snoop inside, but for now, we had to settle for some exterior shots:

Oh, my goodness (this is the East Coast speaking) -- how wonderful! you can just imagine the romances (and broken hearts) that place has seen.

I've driven by this place so many times on the way home. Now, get us inside one of the apartments.

It looks great but too bad they changed out the original front windows. Someone in Los Angeles needs to ban vinyl window replacement and quick!

I hear you perejil. It seems like every old apartment building in Seattle has ugly vinyl windows that just look C-H-E-A-P too. I heard that for a while the city was actually subsidizing vinyl window replacements in rentals because of the energy saved. That's a worthy cause, but there has to be a way of going about it that's more in keeping with the aesthetic of old buildings.

Hi oceandreamer56: last I checked, there weren't any vacancies. I'll keep an eye out for it when I pass by.
