Complex Love: The Villa San Pasqual

080307_complexlove.jpg
In a cluster of apartment complexes that look numbingly simliar, the Villa San Pasqual stands unapologetic in all its turquoise-and-orange glory. It's been honored with historic landmark status by the city of Pasadena for its fine example of mid-century architecture (and perfectly manicured lawns). Driving by this place is a bit like going through a time warp to 1953 when Eisenhower was president, hula hooping was the hot thing to do, and for every Rebel Without a Cause was a Father who Knows Best.

Complex Love is a photographic celebration of Southern California's unique apartment architecture history. Live in or nearby an apartment complex of notable or unusual design? Please submit photos and information to gregory (at) apartmenttherapy (dot) com.

Oooo, lovely!

There is a series of these that are quite similar in type here in Seattle's lower Queen Anne neighborhood which were built in the same decade. Used to walk past them all the time when I lived in the general area. Now I live in a totally different neighborhood in Seattle so don't go by them much if at all anymore. :-(

Wow! Look at those windows! I've never lived anywhere with windows like that, and I love being able to look outside.

I'm tellin' ya, Gregory - put flyers on everyone's doors a few weeks before you plan to photograph a place telling about AT (with references to the website) and what you're doing and that you'd like to photograph the inside of one for architectural purposes, offer them something from AT and the chance to have their home featured here (we'll all promise not to critique their decorating, won't we guys?) and maybe someone will let you in. Or, check in with the managers to see if there's maybe an empty unit.

I really like this feature and not seeing the insides (even if they're just plain and boxy) is driving me nuts! If I lived in the area I'd offer to help you out with some of the legwork.

Thanks for another great post.

It's beautiful. Can you create a link to the past postings? I really find these photos inspiring.

Ocean: Actually, you should commend and credit Grace, one of our new bloggers for this one (she just used my account to post while we set her up with her own). Trust me when I say we'd love to make an effort to get inside some of these places, but there's many things that make this difficult currently. One is that we're all fulltime working professionals who squeeze these Complex Love posts during our lunch breaks, after work and weekends; we're always hoping more of our readers extend the feature by submitting photos and information of complexes in their neighborhoods (hopefully in due time).

The other difficulty, just with house tours, is that people in LA are actually very, very tenative of allowing us inside their homes/apartments. We're trying hard to line up as many house tours (and that's where Complex Love and House Tours differ) as possible, and hopefully a few of these sort of apartments will be featured. But I think this is going to change as we keep doing House Tours and you, our readers, spread the word about the feature (because your word of mouth is what we depend upon).

But don't get too frustrated...I promise the next house tour actually falls under both categories of House Tours and Complex Love! And we're trying very hard to line up some future tours that let you take peeks into other complexes, while retaining Complex Love as a snapshot and reader submitted feature.

These are actually now condominiums. Here's one for sale:

I'm a content and fairly new resident of the V.San Pasqual (the turquoise and *pink* section). There are two for sale now, and both are, like most of the units, very well preserved. There's another complex in Pasadena that's almost identical, near the Rose Bowl. The developer, Lionel Mayell, did similar projects in Phoenix (also pink) and Houston, along with the Artaban and Villa Riviera in Long Beach--it's nice to see that his projects have survived largely intact and many have the historical landmark designation.
