Cash for Plasmas? California Talks About Banning Energy Sucking TVs

As the U.S. aims to weed out energy and gas guzzlers, the California Energy Commission (CEC) plans to take a vote on a controversial requirement that would restrict the sale of inefficient TVs starting in 2011. The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) opposes the mandate, saying that it would lead to the death of plasmas and large LCDs, but the CEC says it would save Californians between $18 to $30 per year per television in energy costs...

wow, will america stand behind a decision that would put environmental concerns before one's consumer "rights"? somehow i doubt it. north america has been told for years that it "deserves" whatever it desires, "needs" whatever it wants and its privileges have mysteriously morphed into "rights." it's hard to break out of that frame of mind. after all, what is the difference between us and some third world schmucks if we can't drive a hummer and watch a big screen tv in our mcmansion?

bitter? maybe a little...

I did my rant over on the other site, but heck, I'm going to do it here.

This sort of legislation does not address environmental concerns. I'm willing to believe that the sponsors of bills like this think they're actually helping things, but I'm willing to bet they're more or less clueless, and have little science background.

Making something new sucks up an extraordinary amount of energy. It's a huge road of mining, refining, melting, pouring, molding, shaping, shipping, boxing, storing. All those processes use energy. AND they require us to take extra natural resources out of the Earth and dump extra toxic substances out into the Earth. Let's use MORE plastic to make ANOTHER TV, guys!

I would love to see some research about the difference in energy use between keeping an old plasma TV 5 years and building, shipping, and running a new "greener" TV for 5 years.

The old TVs have already done their main damage to the Earth during their production and use of non-biodegradable plastic and toxic chemicals. Making new TVs requires us to duplicate a lot of the same environmental damange. Bad, bad, bad. Legislators who don't consider this are short-sighted and they drive me crazy.

I would bet a lot of money that keeping the old TV wins out for being "green" over making the new one. Probably by a factor of 10 or 20.

This sort of legislation helps TV companies, not the Earth.

If we're really all about the Earth, we'd STOP BUYING ALL THE CRAP WE BUY and just learn to live without stuff.

How ridiculous. If this wasn't California I would believe our legislature was even considering limiting people's liberty over--at best--$30 in yearly savings. Our government should focus on passing a balanced budget on time (for once!) and leave people's freedom to spend their hard earned cash alone. The gall of the most incompetent legislature in the country deigning to know how to spend our money better than we do is almost to much to bear.
