I wasn't sure if I was willing to share one of my best kept secrets with everyone, but we're a family now, right? So here it is: Pepe's Thrifty Shop in Culver City. The place isn't big, but it's literally piled from floor to ceiling with furniture. It's a treasure chest teeming with possibilities. Furniture ranges from Mid-Century credenzas to 40's liquor cabinets to French bistro chairs. Plus they have a healthy selection of lamps, clocks, chandaliers, mirrors and paintings.

New furniture is added constantly, so if you don't find what you're looking for, try again a week later. Locals know to check back often, so if you do find something you can't live without, buy it on the spot. Although you pay a bit higher for the convenience of shopping in town, I've also found that they aren't above friendly bartering.

This reminds me of a place my grandmother used to shop in Brooklyn. I love digging in a place that piled floor to ceiling with stuff. It's like finding buried treasure.

*sigh* This is the kind of place I would find fun to shop around in. Sadly, my foray in Culver City was very short lived. I went down to stay with friends in 2002 to look for work, but ended up having to come back to the Seattle/Tacoma area 6 months later. :-(

However, Seattle has lots of cool places like this so it's not all bad. :-)

It's bad enough that I have to deal with cutthroat Venice Beach dealers who haul everything away that they could mark up 1000%...I just hope that after this expose', Pepe's will not join the ranks of those thrift stores run by well known charitable institutions (you know who you are) who by the way is supposed to help the poor but somehow had to inflate everything because the price of FREE had gone up recently.

I thank you for letting me know about this place. I swear I won't tell anyone else. But I might do some damage there!! Thanks again!
