99-cent-store-front-.jpgWe like to play the “gun to head” game.

When we're walking down a street with an equally beauty-obsessed friend and we pass an awful bric-a-brac, filled-to-the- brim store window we'll ask, “gun to head what’s the one thing in the window you’d take.”

It’s like finding the gem under all of the crizzap.

99-cent-blue-vase-.jpgFor this reason we love the 99 Cents Only stores. They sate us. Finding something that can pass, if you will, for the real thing is a thrill.

99-cent-candle-.jpgThese are our favorite finds. In the summer, we put the brightest Gerber daisies we can find in the blue vase. There are two of The little colored glass votives. Outside, flickering around some pots… they are a delight. 99-cent-round-.jpgThe little Adler-esque piece was just found a few days ago while purchasing the other thing the 99 Cents Only stores do so well: Bulk candy!

This is not the typical disigner's haunt, but when you need a little pick-me-up, why not see if you can do it for under a buck?

Alec. Oh how I love the 99 Cents Only chain! They saved my life when I hosted an Oscar party/buffet at my place for 15+ people and I decided that as grown-ups we all deserved real stoneware, glassware and flatware. Simple, modern rocks glasses priced at 2 for 99 cents. I saw the Adler-esque vase (and others) that day. Another good chain if you live in areas outside of Hollywood is The Dollar Tree. They had fancy-schmancy-looking gold rimmed dishes for a buck. And I was able to buy toy cellphones and fake plastic bling for my Oscar-themed giftbags.

i second enrique and alec's 99¢ store rave- its like a thrift store, you just never know what you're going to find, and its usually all good- (or is that a box of chocolates?) anyways- another good thing is the Marukai 98 cent stores- that is an offshoot of the Marukai japanese/hawaiian grocery stores- its like the 99cent stores, but everything's from japan! everything from cool cheap japanese ceramics to ramen noodle and even great cheapy travel plastics stuff, etc...for you LA peeps, they have one in Gardena and Torrance.

For the SF Bay Area crowd, a shout-out to Japantown's Ichiban Kan, where most (but not all) items are about $1.

If you want to get out of the house the Friday after Thanksgiving but don't want to be trampled by Xmas shoppers, a really big Dollar Tree is fabulous.
