5 Faux Fall Items We Love

Yesterday, we spotted caramel candy apples in the grocery store and loved how they reminded us of all things Fall (the fair, pumpkin carving parties and Halloween). But if you're anything like us, you don't actually like the taste of candy apples--just the warm memories associated with them...

It's the same with acorns, rocks and plants (some folks like bringing the outdoors in, other folks--not so much). These faux Fall creations (while fake) have a great design element that is playful and really neat. We also love that these faux finds are from Etsy shop owners--hop over to their stores below.

I'm confused -

Why would anyone spend money on fake acorns and rocks when you can just go for a walk in the park and pick the real things up for free?

And aren't white fabric apples and needlepoint lichen a bit "Country Craft Fair?"

The felt pebbles look like silk worm cocoons, only purple and yellow

I love the things people are doing with felting. The acorns are great--they have real tops.

These are adorable and I love supporting Etsy crafters but... you really have to be looking to burn money with these, I think. Especially, as someone mentioned, when fall is about the only time you can find great leaves, apples, etc. for centerpieces for real!

I dunno about the craft of "felting".

Unlike genuinely useful crafts like sewing, knitting, and pottery, felters seem to have nothing useful to make, so they fashion little felt replicas of things.

Look! A felt acorn! A felt rock! A felt flower!

WTF?

FYI: felters knit and crochet items to be felted such as mittens, hats, scarves, slippers and bowls, to name a few. All useful items, IMHO.

shirley-temple-of-doom, people make stuff like this because they enjoy the process and they enjoy looking at the stuff when it's done.

You could say the same about any kind of art. Why hang a painting of a person on your wall when there are real live people to look at? Why sculpt a bird out of clay when you can look out the window and see live birds?

I've made felted hats, mittens and slippers that are extremely warm, durable, and nearly waterproof. I also felted wool around large, smooth granite stones with my daughter a few years ago. It was a lot of fun to do and we use some of the stones as very effective door stops and others just as display objects. I like them because they're both heavy and very hard, but they have a soft, fuzzy covering in the colors of the stone. Plus, having them around reminds me of the fun I had making them with my daughter. And if I get tired of them (or moths eat the wool away), I can just cut the felt off and put the stones back in the garden.

Beauty for the sake of beauty is not a small thing. And what's beautiful to one person isn't going to be beautiful to everyone. To each her own.

Forgot to say---I thought the lavender, yellow and white "pebbles" were supposed to be Jordan almonds! Ha.
