We have a friend who, starting around November, starts to sprinkle his every conversation with random comments like, "I like good eye cream" or “I sure could use a smelly candle". No one is ever asking, mind you, it's just his rather aggressive way of letting folks know what he wants for Christmas.
We like his moxy, so we are going to give it a go:
We are so concerned about global warming, which reminds us, we love those scented sticks that fill a room with great smell without the burning of candles or incense.
This one is by Anthousa ($90) at Barneys.

Why are these so expensive? Do they use essential oils?
Essential oils, the right blend, living in Barney's, and whoever designed this created what appears to be, upon careful review of the item on their website, a glass vase with etched logo. I would imagine that would bring in the price of $90. Aesthetics, I guess.
...or do West Elm's version for 1/4 the cost.

I'm intrigued by these diffusers but given that I am a clutz and the leapy-springy cat that took up residence with me, well, it seems like a recipe for disaster.
West Elm question - the scents listed are "Grapefruit/mandarin, guaiac, sage tea or red berry." What is guaiac?
Apparently guaiac is a Latin American evergreen that produces a resin used in medical tests that, trust me, you don't really want to google your way through on the way to a definition.
"Guaiac" sounds so much more stylish and upscale than "pine," doesn't it?
I would not have figured "Guaiac" for pine scent - it sounded more like some sort of tropical disease. "Better get yours shots - don't want to get Guaiac!"
I JUST LOVE ANTHOUSA! I have several scents, my favorite scent is "Fig Leaf & Bitter Almond".
It's absolutely the wonderful quality of oils and the presentation is exquisite.
These last a long time and are made with natural fragrances and essential oils. Although they never seem to be on sale, LUILEI in brooklyn (Park Slope) puts certain scents on special every now and then. My friend gets the large one and decants them into other vessels she's collected.
