Blessing this Home

So far, this year has been earmarked for me as the Year of Housewarming Parties (as opposed to last year, which was the Year of Baby Showers, and the year before that was the Year of Painful Bridal Showers!) Every invitation I've received so far brings about the same results: I wait until the very last second to get a gift, and it's usually a plant that mysteriously disappears the next time I visit. Finally, after voicing gift-selecting frustrations, a friend of mine suggested Dogeared, a jewelry company based in Culver City who have branched a bit from their "Make a Wish" necklaces and are now offering a House Blessings collection.

I was a wee bit wary at first when she told me about them, but then when I actually got one, I was completely enamored with it (FYI, it's a brass deer head). The collection consists of various icons that range from hearts to lions that are meant to symbolize well-wishing to the home it hangs in. Conveniently, each house blessing comes with a gift card explaining its significance, so you don't have to be put on the spot during an awkward gift-opening ceremony ("Umm....it's ummm...supposed to be ummm...lucky...? better to give consumable gifts. think artisan bread, soy candle, classic bottle of wine. maybe not as innovative as a house-blessing amulet, but they do get used, don't take up space or wind up in a junk drawer.

I disagree, Holland. Rule #1 of housewarming is don't give a candle! Especially if you know your friends well enough, a gift like this is appropriate. I'm sure Jonathan knew whether or not his friends would enjoy this. If it's someone you don't know so well, then yes, another bottle of wine to stack with the other 8 they receive (boooring). And hey, if they don't like the charm, (gasp!) it's easily re-giftable, haha. :D

Dogeared is great, by the way. I've bought several of their Make-a-wish necklaces at Firefly in Venice (wishbone, the horseshoe, and the heart key)...always a great birthday or holiday gift. They are so tiny and pretty, and well-made to boot. I wear the horseshoe all the time!
