Hermes Blankets

hermes-blanket.jpgHello. Our name is Alec, and we're a label whore.
We can’t help it, we love Hermes. Even if this same orange blanket can be found elsewhere for a tenth of the price (this part cashmere beauty is $1000.00), the thought of a life where anything Hermes thrown over the back of a club chair or bench just thrills us.

Please don’t hate us. We know it’s sick -- and we don't mean sick as in “hot” or “phat” or “dope”, just plain ol’ wrong. But you know how sometimes being wrong feels so right? At least we can admit that we have a problem, and isn’t that the first step?

This is dumb--if you really have to have something Hermes, get the beach towel. Expensive for a towel, cheap for art. Or patiently scour thrift shops for damaged old scarves and quilt with them.

Nothing wrong with being a label whore, if you've got the cash to buy in! (God knows I've got a few high-end pieces mixed in with my current Old Navy lifestyle.)

I'd probably go lower-end because a thousand bucks for a throw is a lot for me. I've found great vintage wool blankets (solids, stripes and flannels) at flea markets for $5-25. They've definitely gotten some wear and "patina", and are not nearly as luxe as the Hermes beauty pictured above... Personally, I've been eye-ing the Pendleton striped picnic blankets every time I stop by the "Made in Oregon" store at the Portland Airport.

That said, I think it would be cool to actually own something as luxe as the Hermes blanket. But knowing me, I'd freak out over the price paid and never actually use it with the frequency I would with the other, less-expensive alternatives.

PS. A few years back, a friend gave me an Hermes-orange t-shirt that parodied the Hermes logo. Instead of "Hermes", it read "Homies" and pictured 2 homeboys on a lowrider bicycle in place of the standard Hermes equestrian imagery.

If that exact blanket, with any labels cut off or otherwise missing, showed up at a thrift store for $20, would you still want it?

If YES, you're buying quality and happen to know that certain (mucho expensivo) brands reliably deliver. If NO, you're a label whore.

If a cashmere blanket showed up at a thrift store-- labels or no labels-- for $20, I want the address of that thrift store.

If it actually happened, the address of that thrift store would stay my secret.

Hmmmm... there *is* one thrift store here where my scenario is possible... must... shop...

Another choice in the super luxe category: LORO PIANA - Cashmere throw trimmed in suede

i say if you love it buy it and enjoy looking at that blanket and using it, you'll be a happier person. the world needs happy people. of course you'd be happiest if you found it in a thrift shop for $20.

Hi,
I was doing a search for - hermes blankets - and ran across your wish. In my opinion everyone deserves a little something in life that they dream of having and I must say you have very good taste! I have this very blanket (throw) but in the warm brown color - new with tags! I have a VERY good friend who buys out merchandise from natural disasters and he just got a shipment in from a large department store in the south. In this shipment there is lots of hermes items. My friend lets me shop first and I bought this blanket today - it's a beauty! I will be listing it on EBAY in the next few days but if you are interested let me know!

I think this is a lot less silly than some Hermes items costing much, much more. It's gorgeous (and expensive) material, it is an amazing color (which literally could transform or inspire an entire room) and it is simple enough to be classic for a long, long time... all ways to justify the purchase, if you need to.

Could you spend less? Of course. But of all the thing syou could splurge on, this is prety sensible.

One of my favorite items I own is an oversized Ralph Lauren hurricane lantern, knocked off many times since I first saw it, and for much less money. But I enjoy having the original.. partly because the money for it was an offshoot of a friend's monetary enticement to part with my beloved magazine collection, but partly because it represented to me a personal milestone where I COULD buy something semi-extravagant from Ralph Lauren, right out of the RL store.

But it's all very personal.

I purchased a 79" x 57" Hermes - Paris 85% Wool and 15%Cashmere (Scotland) in Sedona. It is black and red with large H letters throughout. I am interested in selling it as I over invested. I couldn't resist it How do I go about selling it? The party selling it claims it is and older blanket. Thank you

Mary, I know your post is about a year and a half old, but if you haven't sold that blanket yet, I might be interested in buying it from you. How much were you looking to get?

I'm still trying to figure out how "our name" is Alec. Isn't that taking the AT "collective-we" signature just a bit too far??
