Intaglio Collection by WhiteWebb

It has been said that "Everything in LA is fake." Well, Matthew White and Frank Webb, the duo that form WhiteWebb, have taken that notion and created a witty yet beautiful collection of furniture and home furnishings called Intaglio. Originally conceptualized a few years ago for an installation at the Huntington Library in Pasadena, the collection takes historical and architechtural artwork, hyper-enlarging them, and then silk screening them onto wood or laser cut acrylic.

Each piece is a bold statement of antique imagery yet functional through modern execution. The collection includes mirrors, lamps, tables, sconces, shelves, and even a "dog pavilion." Recently, WhiteWebb created an installation piece at the Rice Gallery in Houston, TX. Entitled "Eminent Domain", they used the same technique, but played with scale and perspective, and explored the concept of man vs.nature. The end result is described as "Louis XV meets Munchinkland on steroids." The Intaglio chandelier is also featured in this month's Los Angeles magazine. Neat. I find this concept much better as an installation piece than as everyday furniture. The central message of interpretation, deconstruction and reconstruction is much more cohesive in a completed room with like pieces versus an individual piece standing out like a sore thumb in a traditionally furnished room.

I love this stuff however I do hope they nod towards fornasetti as a source of their inspiration.
