Pier 1 Update: Ceramic Branch vases, birdhouses, and Foo Dogs

022008pier1update.jpgLast week Laure blogged about some of the latest things happening at Pier 1. The other night we stopped our local one to take a gander firsthand and saw a bunch of accessories that aren't listed on the catalog or website...

022008birds.jpgWe fell in love with these white ceramic branch vases! They each have a cute little bird on them and they come in two sizes. The smaller one is about $15 and the larger is about $18. 022008birdhouses.jpgWe also liked these ceramic hanging bird houses. At first glance we were attracted to the unusual shape, and then realized they're actually supposed to mimic seashells. One is more of a snail shell shape and the other is more of a conch shell. These were also under $20.
022008foodog.jpgFinally, if anyone was looking for a Foo Dog to add some chinoiserie to their decor, they had these turquoise ones that looked pretty good (although they are not ceramic but seemed more like plaster painted to look ceramic.) If you want to go with something a bit more authentic, we found a few online that all seemed to run about $195, but if you want the look for less, these at Pier One were $20 each. Overall, like Laure, we weren't overly wow-ed but there definitely are some good finds there, and a bunch that aren't shown in the catalog. Has anyone else been in lately and saw anything they liked?

Well, yeah. But not Mod stuff. I hate that. There's a hanging lamp - Maki - that isn't on the website. It seems to be brown, woven jute. Very pretty. Some great earthen mugs. A nice bamboo floor screen. And the Adah desk and chair. Aqua colored iron and glass top.

Also that green bistro table and chairs (plus plantstands).

Anyone else find that the merchandising in Pier 1 should really be upped? I find stuff is everywhere and there are no clear pathways... makes it hard to make sure you haven't missed anything when you're in there for bargains because they will have the same stuff spread out everywhere! And it's equally hard when you're looking for somethign specific!

Alot of stores are in spring transition right now, the DC's are sending out so much product and we are simply running out of room.

I believe the foo dogs are made out of terracotta, i was opening them at work one was broken.

In the placemats section they had a red wooden mat of circles that was marked down to about $2.50 a piece. If red is your thing, these would be great arranged on a wall. I plan to paint them blue for my own decor. Not sure if I'm going to wire them together in a diamond pattern or a straight line yet though.

In fact, several of the tablesetting/cloth placemats were beautifully decorated (beaded or embroidered) and marked down quite a bit. They'd be nice framed or simply hung on the wall, or used as an accent piece on a table under some vases or lamps.

Nearby there was a stunning blue and white swirl serving dish and bowls. While the dish was on display nicely, I would probably get just one bowl to use as decoration or even a jewelry dish by my nightstand. I didn't see the price yet and I doubt it's on clearance!

The pinwheel-embroidered pillows would make a nice gift for someone into crafting or stitching. I passed because I don't have the room right now. I saw them in the catalog but found them in the way back on the bed display.

I bought the "italian bath foam" because of the blue bottle (tall, not short, although it too had an interesting blue design), and intend to see how well it looks sans bath junk. Slightly awkward to carry or maneuver, I was worried I'd drop it, but for $25 it's about average for a vase/decorative piece.

In the back near the foo dogs I saw a lovely marbley-swirled blue vase I picked up as well for a low price.

My mother picked up the square ironwork scroll art for above her bed for $30, I think. It matches the scrolls in her bedframe and fit perfectly between two windows. Great buy. I was looking at the long rectangular rattan circle pattern piece for my office. I also grabbed the set of 3 fake succulent plants for $8 because on a shelf you can't tell they're fake ;)

And finally, they had a marvelous dark brown round wooden "frame" and had planted some fake, twisty greenery in the center! As I was looking at it two other women remarked at how unique it was and we all bought one.

Sometimes it's a great day to shop at Pier1 and sometimes you go in and nothing but junk!
