Beth's Do It Now Project : Retro Green Side Table #1

021709project-02.jpgThe stars aligned this past Saturday (or rather the rain stopped) long enough for us to get started on our Do It Now Project. Because we haven't had the opportunity to work on our project until now, we've had a slight change in plans for our project...

021709project-04.jpgInitially we wanted to strip and stain our little side table but have since taken a different path. Another option had always been to paint our green table a high gloss white (which won out in the end). Our shopping trip to Home Depot was fast and easy, picking up two spray cans of Painter's Touch Primer and two spray cans of Rustoleum Lacquer. We also purchased a bag of latex gloves (to protect our new manicure) and some fine grain sandpaper.

The legs screwed off for easy spray painting.

The table after sanding.

We removed the colored plastic strip between the drawers to make sure we achieved superior spray paint coverage. Instead of putting the plastic strip back in place once we're done, we've decided to get a custom mirror strip cut for the area between the drawers. Unfortunately, Home Depot does not do custom mirror strips, so we're off to our local glass and mirror shops this week.

The Painter's Touch Primer allows for sanding in between coats.

021709project-05.jpgWe know what you're thinking--we're ruining our front lawn by using the dirt as a holding zone to spray paint the table's legs. What you don't know is that our front lawn is infested with moles (which our landlord has refused to remedy). The lawn is no more than a huge pile of lightly packed soil with weeds growing on top. Once the legs dried, we tilled the soil to cover-up any traces of spray paint.

Next up is more sanding followed by our Rustoleum Lacquer with a custom cut mirror attached between the drawers. We also want to invest in some new hardware and will be stopping by Anthroplogie this week. Because this table's background will be the black wall of a bedroom, we're thinking of painting a decorative pattern of black stripes on top (or should we leave the top white?). What are your thoughts or ideas?

Will we ever stop hearing about this side table? This isn't a Do It Now project... this is a Procrastinate NOW project.

I'd leave the top white or paint an inset black border leaving a white border around it as well.

Go all white, because then you have the flexibility to movie it around your house, should you want to.

Moles or no moles, you're letting toxic paint seep into the ground which eventually ends up in your local waterways. It's worth taking the time to put down a little newspaper.

And that's my busybody allotment for the day.

FOUR cans of spraypaint?

i also agree with dearmisha. you might not have an attractive lawn.. but seriously.. put down an old sheet or newspaper.
aside from the environmental laziness.. you run a high risk of dust/dirt/little bugs/etc sticking to the paint.. then drying in it.. and that will A:look bad, B:chip/flake/fall off in the future, leaving a bare spot.

My comment is SO no on topic here, but if you are in LA, I would bet big money that you have pocket gophers and not moles. Moles are not indigenous to Southern Ca.

Oh, and I like the table!

I have a vintage dresser with legs almost just like these and also the removeable strips of color. Mine is also white (the original color.) The dresser goes with a 4 piece bedroom set that my mom used as a little girl and I used for my entire life so far. This particular dresser has moved with me everywhere and been a savior for my fiance and I. The strips had a few color options, but over time I have painted one side of each black. Check out what mine looks like here:

I actually just bought a table identical to this for $10 awhile ago. Mine was already painted, a pretty minty/seafoam green. And it has some black vintage chandelier stencils on the front of the bottom drawer and on the top at each corner. I think doing something like stripes would be good for this, because the little accents really make this table unique. Everybody asks me where they can get one!

Depending on the style of your room, an ornate furniture stencil in black on white might really make this piece pop. If you are more minimalist stripes would also be cool.
