Easy DIY: Using Fabric Markers

The last time we checked in with Merrilee of MerMag, she was showing us how to transform glass containers. Using handmade labels to organize laundry detergent (with a free download to make your own), she's always got great, simple ideas for adding a bit of style to your home...

Her most recent DIY is using a fabric marker to transform ordinary tablecloths and tea towels into something stylish and neat. We love the yellow she chose to make plain, white cloth look chic and modern. We like to keep it simple when drawing patterns (less is definitely more in our book). Stick to one color marker for a clean and artistic design--think geometric forms. It might also help to draft some quick doodles on graph paper before you make your first permanent line on fabric. Merrilee found her fabric markers here but we're pretty sure you could pick some up from your local craft store.

I love the Fabric Markers. I always silk screen any fabric but I never thought of using these markers. Thanks for the tip. And yes sometimes simple is more :)

I haven't used fabric markers -- how would they look if you lightly pencilled in your design first, then drew over the lines? My freehand skills are pretty awful.

You could probably pin a printed sheet of paper behind a white tea towel or pillowcase and just trace a design. Or use a lightbox.

stegersaurus - use a light table and you should be good. you could even build a cheap one to use for this.

This looks so fun! But does anyone know where I can find some inexpensive plain white throw pillow covers? It's not as easy as I figured it would be...
