apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Jaime's Little Dresser Transformation

You've got a plain jane dresser that needs a bit of panache, but a new coat of paint isn't enough? Apartment Therapy reader Jamie sent us her DIY project which transformed a lifelong furniture piece that has followed her from nursery to her current dwelling into something quite unique...

I have had this dresser my entire life (my mom took it as a hand me down for my nursery). It's been yellow, white, red, blue (with sponge painted clouds even), brown (you know, to match the leopard print bed spread, we're all glad that phase is over), and lastly purple. Now- it is still purple- but with upholstered drawer fronts!

Materials:

  • 3 yards- fabric (over estimated totally- but better safe than sorry)
  • 1 roll- Batting (picked a quilters batting, as it seemed easy to work with)
  • 1- staple gun
  • 1 box- 1/2" staples (verify first the depth of the wood to be stapled)

What I did:

  • Removed drawers- take off all hardware / knobs.
  • Measure & cut the batting and fabric (fabric an 1inch or so larger than batting for coverage)
  • Staple the batting (staples were spaced generously, jsut enough to get the batting in place)
  • IRON THE FABRIC (more critical to final look than I at first thought)
  • place the fabric, and begin in center to anchor- pulling fabric taught and stapling frequently!
  • Pull, Fold and staple to get crisp corners.
  • I then cut a small hole with scissors where the screw / knobs needed to puncture the fabric. I used some fabric sealer (or clear nail polish) to finish the fabric around the hole- then screw in the knobs! Tada!

I've never upholstered anything before, (even had to borrow the staple gun) but it turned out quite clean & crisp, and really gave some new life to my little dresser! I have this in my walk-in closet- so it really just makes my morning when I go in there to get dressed.

Thanks for sharing, Jamie! And anyone else out there with a DIY project you're proud of, send it in to us at la@apartmenttherapy.com.

So cute! I just upholstered a headboard and it definitely changed the room. I never thought to do drawers, but now I'm thinking of getting something on craigslist just to try it!

I love that the dresser has been with you so long and seen so many phases. Well done!

The fabric is so pretty! What a great example for using fabric to totally remake a piece. Thanks so much for sharing this, I'll be linking.

Gorgeous! I still use the dresser my parents bought when I was born. I covered the drawer fronts in postage stamps.
