apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Just the Little Things...

052008_littlethings.jpgA friend of ours was telling us about how she finally buckled down and finally got to repainting the heating vent in her apartment. Because it was such a minor thing, she kept putting it off for a good four months...and now that it's done, she keeps marveling over what a difference it makes in the living room.

We can sympathize--after swapping out a light fixture in the dining room, there's a perfect circle of old paint and general crustiness of where the old fixture was. It also doesn't help that the new light directs all kinds of unwanted attention to it. It's been a few months already, and we're still looking at it feeling guilty. We'll get to it this week...fingers crossed.

I just replaced a ceiling mounted light with a pendant fixture and need to do some touch up painting but am a little skeptical of my painting skills.

I think it would be nice to paint it a color that stands out, rather than blends in. Maybe glossy orange or black--or stainless.

The unit is actually not that ugly, and trying to hide it is futile. Emphasizing it could lend an industrial look to the room.

Maybe even some pinstripes, in a contrasting color, across the middle....

Scraping the painting off my bathroom tiles where the tiles meet the plaster.

The bathroom was repainted before I moved into my new apartment, and the painters were sloppy when it came to the seam where the plaster meets the tiles. There is an uneven line of paint and small spatters along the top level of tiles. Of course it's even worse than you think because the border line of tiles is black and the paint is cream.

I knew I needed to get the tiles cleaned off, but I also needed to get the bathroom up and running, so now, eight months after moving in, I have finally started the process. And it has made a huge difference where it is complete.

Hardly the biggest deal; just a minor detail to finish off the room. Tedious and time consuming, but clearly worth the effort.

re-redo the edging on my kitchen ceiling. I only noticed I used the wrong paint after it dried. PITA.

I can absolutely relate. We tore down wallpaper, repainted the walls and cabinet, and replaced the light fixture in our half bath a couple months after we moved into our house. We STILL (over 2 years later now) have not fixed the wood piece that made the cabinet fit to the wall so there's a gap between the cabinet and the wall. For about a year, the towel rack and toilet paper holder were not up either!

I just recently replaced a ceiling light fixture as well, and the circle that remains is driving me nuts. The ceiling is lighter where the old fixture (which had a much larger base) was and there is a dark line at the edge. I vacuumed the area to remove the dust as much as possible...(we have horrible popcorn ceilings) but I don't know how to disguise the lighter circle now. Any ideas out there?

I had a friend replace my light fixture in my bathroom. Beautiful! Unfortunately, he must have done something wrong because only one side of the light fixture works. I have been looking at it for 3 months and it drives me crazy! Obviously, not crazy enough to get it fixed:)

The little things are so important. Your friend's place looks so much better without that funky blemish! The cause would also be a concern. Has she had the heater checked out?

I have a long, long list of little projects to take care of. At the top of the list: replacing door trim, finishing screw holes in cabinetry with wooden plugs, cleaning up door hinges and switching out door knobs so that we have a consistent style throughout our home.

Moved into my new co-op (first buy, first time living solo) about 1.5 years back which I'd almost totally renovated. I'd been here mere weeks when the maintenance man came to fix my doorbell, the big old kind attached to the door; had been painted shut and he needed to pull it off to check any possible interior problem before replacing (there was none). I'm absolutely new to being a DIY person (takes me hours to hang every picture and mirror, but afterwards I feel so accomplished). Now there's an outline around where the new paint was pulled off when he tore off and replaced the fixture. There and around the new ceiling track-light fixture in the kitchen just beside the front door. One day...

The bulb in the kitchen ceiling fixture started flickering over the weekend. The other one is burned out. I couldn't stand it so I turned off the kitchen light. It's a little hard to navigate without light!

I bought two new CF bulbs, and plan to call the apartment management tomorrow to see if Jose, the extremely courtly and considerate head of maintenance, will take down the fixture and replace the two bulbs for me. I'm only 5'2" and don't currently have a ladder, so it's impossible for me to do on my own. It's a matter of remembering to make the call, and then remembering to remind them later. And then remembering to make cookies for Jose at Christmas.

I came home to find the smoke alarm going off in the kitchen (my poor dog's ears!). After realizing nothing was on fire, I attacked the smoke alarm with a broom handle to shut it up! It fell out of the ceiling and is hanging by a few wires. It still works but I can't get myself to put it back in the ceiling.
