apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Look!: Another DIY Closet
Part III

110608closet-04.jpgWe stopped by our friend's new pad last evening on the way home and spotted her new DIY closet. Apparently there isn't any storage in her new apartment except for the kitchen cabinets. Needing to come up with a solution to store her clothes, our friend DIY'd her own closet. More views after the jump.

110608closet-01.jpgNeeding a place for her clothes to land, our friend took two dowel rods and a couple of chains and hung them from the ceiling. It's helped out further by this product from the Container Store, doubling the storage space of this DIY closet. She also put the white bookcase in her room that was previously in the living room. Because the bookcase runs the length of the entire bedroom wall, she can store clothes (since there's no room for a dresser), books and containers. We love this clever, DIY closet.

That's in her bedroom? I was thinking it was a separate dressing room...

She desperately needs an IKEA PAX wardrobe setup with lots of doors and drawers - This is makeshift and cluttery.

Not a single closet? Oy.

Give the woman some credit; she did a lot with a little and it looks neat, at least.

I like it!! I think it looks so creative, and she can see everything at once.

The jade needs a few hours of full, direct sunlight or it will die.

very resourceful!

my only concern is that with the clothes hanging so close to the window, the side facing the direct sunlight will begin to fade colors (it doesn't look like there are blinds or curtains), and you'll end up with unevenly faded clothing.

and why we have 3 quasi-identical photos of the space...?

Good job though, it's not easy to deal with no closets, and not enough money for a PAX wardrobe system (or no desire to spend the money on that, which I get)

Reminds me of my college roommate's bedroom-- she had too many clothes to fit into the closet so she had an open hanger system like this. I had the same problem in my room (it was an old house) but at least sprung for the $80 ikea wardrobe.

My room looked better..

I did something very similar when I was sharing a house with friends, there were only two real bedrooms, so I volunteered to use the closet-less "family room" as my bedroom. I got a large well lit space, that was big enough to have half as a bed area and half as a crafting area.

Rather than invest in a Pax wardrobe (I'm allergic to formaldehyde, so particleboard is right out), or put up some kind of temporary wall, I put a few eyebolts into the ceiling joists and used dowels to create a open air closet/ room divider. My dresser added a bit of solidity to the virtual wall, and I hung some sculptural lanterns in the open space above the dresser.

The whole thing actually looked very artistic and I got several complements on the arrangement. It probably helped that I have a rather small and severely color coordinated wardrobe, so it looked interesting rather than messy...

I kinda like it. The open shelves are cool, I hate it when people put curtains over storage. I'm with Gideon though, that jade needs to be in a lower spot, in a good window. Maybe you just moved him there for the photo. I hope so.

Frannybee - really good point about the potential for clothing to fade in the direct sunlight.

I think the whole idea is fairly resourceful, but it just looks way too cluttered for me. I do like the brown and white boxes, but I would just as soon buy some plywood and hinges to cover that unit with some doors.

Sweaters need to be enclosed in something to prevent moth damage, which exists all year round in Southern California.

The dowels are okay, but not in front of the window, I'd agree.

Personally, I'd just look for a dresser on Craigslist.

I'd worry about dirt from the open window and dust over-all on the clothing. I'd be tempted to throw a sheet over the hanging clothing until I came up with a better solution. Maybe a track of hospital curtains around the hanging apperatus to make it an 'enclosed' closet?

Nice creativity, though most comments display valid concerns.
