Look! DIY Litter Boxes Hidden Inside Bookcase

091008audomatic-01.jpgAsk any cat owner with an ounce of decor-savvy what is amongst their top "pet peeves" and litter boxes will likely be high up there (right next to surprise phantom hairballs). Most litter boxes aren't much too easy on the eyes, and some are just crazy contraptions that forgo any apparent forethought about decor-friendliness (we did roundup our favourite cat litter boxes not that long ago, so all hope is not lost). But how fantastic is this recent addition to our Apartment Therapy LA Flickr Pool submitted by DIY-savvy aud-o-matic, that invisibly integrates their pet's needs with the rest of their interior decor...

"These are two of the three litter box boxes I built to conceal the litter boxes as well as their potential odor (with 3.5 cats, I still scoop regularly). I added a divider to the innards of the box for support and to make it a little more "challenging" to get in and out of the box to minimize tracking. I also lined all three boxes with carpet scraps, again, to minimize tracking."

091008audomatic-02.jpg"I used a jigsaw to mock I mean cut out this entrance for our pear-shaped cats."

091008audomatic-03.jpg"Left pic: the wall behind our couch, including a mini-litter box box. Right pic: inside the mini-litter box box."

Very impressive. Add some sort of air filtration device and you have the perfect kitty litter potty solution beyond training your feline friend to go potty in your potty and flush themselves.

Unless I had a flat without closets, I would never put the litter box in the living area. No way. Especially considering it's incorporated into a piece of furniture. What happens if the wood gets soiled??? No thanks.

Is "Pet Month," or whatever this is, over yet?

I'm not sure I could have the litterboxes in the main area, but this is such a cute idea. I suppose if you clean them very regularly, it wouldn't be an issue. A good solution for those of us who don't have closets to spare.

And I'm so over the anti-pet month comments. Get used to it; it's only September 10th.

Kimber and first5times:

Not only do we scoop very regularly, but the cats only use the living room litter box at night (read: not that frequently) since our dog is out and about in the daytime, and they tend to shy away from him (crazy herding Corgi). I didn't want to put too many litter boxes in the office, so I figured semi-concealed in the living room corner wasn't the worst place (kitchen?) I could put another one.

Almost every guest we've had over that didn't know us before moving into this apartment has been surprised to find out we have cats, especially so many, because of the lack of odor, so I guess that's a good sign. In the end, I'm just happy to not see fugly plastic litter boxes all over the house.

This is a fabulous idea! I've been thinking of building something similar — in a credenza style — for a few months ...

That dog looks like he is saying really bitch do I have to go in there again. As a dog owner for many years that is strange. Taking your furniture and compartments too far. Scratch my head.

I'm with you, Jon. I guess I'll tune back in come October, as there's nothing for non-pet-owners to read.

beesknees - joint custody? *heehee* (probably just a fat cat...)

I love this idea, but I cannot stand the thought of having litter boxes anywhere other than the bathroom - all the poo in the house should be in the same place! Also, no way I would remember to scoop everyday if I couldn't see it, but I guess I am just lazy that way.

i'm also over all the comments that either are too oblivious to have noticed the banner at the top saying "pet design month - all september", or the negative comments about it BEING pet design month and all the posts about living with pets. GET OVER IT! we out number you...and obviously a lot of other people are enjoying it! it's ONLY a month. 30 days to be exact! if you can't find something to enjoy about it, then don't come back till october. good grief.

If you have 3 cats, it's no wonder your Corgi is attempting to herd them. Remember, a Corgi is a Working Group dog specifically bred for animal herding. Therefore having multiple animals or even children can easily bring out their herding instincts. My parents sometimes reminisce about how when I was a toddler, our first Corgi would prevent me from wandering more than a certain distance from them. This is a prime example of their protective instincts.

I'm questioning the 3.5 cats as well? Is one part cat, part something else?

Love the idea though, that would have been ideal when we had cats and a very small condo!

I'm not surprised the cats avoid this box during the day -- there's only one entrance/exit and so with the dog around they may feel threatened.

My cats would never use this kind of setup, no matter how much I like the idea.

beesknees and LaurieLu:

I say 3.5 because one of our cats basically lives outside but comes in to eat. He's also part cat, part devil.

As far as the dog/cat relationship is concerned, two of the cats get along fine with Marzipan (the dog) as they are Maine Coons and can take him on if the situation calls for it. They do, however, spend most of their time in the office where an unspoken barrier has been drawn, and the dog, for the most part, refrains from entering.

dr_mk:

The cats actually seem to enjoy the privacy the extra box provides them. No complaints yet!

Mr Mickey Moo is 23 lbs and doesn't really fit in average litterboxes..not only that but he never makes sure his bum is in the litter box and drops bombs on the floor. He's using a Rubbermaid storage bin. Meow Meow uses a Booda dome but prefers houseplants. I think she hates the dome because she can't see if someone is out to get her. No one is. She just prefers a thrill filled life.

Samson, one of our cats, is 24 lbs! And his brother is 18 lbs. When Samson uses the litter box, his head always sticks out, which is very disconcerting for him as well as anyone watching because he just looks like an angry, crazy turtle. Now he gets more privacy with the giant litter box boxes.
