Plan Canvas: DIY Furniture Plans

072108plancanvas01.jpgWhenever we're perusing through used books at flea markets or used book stores, we undoubtedly run into well worn books from the 1950's-70's illustrating how to build your own furniture. Build-your-own furniture projects seem a lot less common these days, but those of you hankering for a weekend(s) project and some new furnishings might want to check Plan Canvas, a website that offers downloadable PDF furniture plans...

072108plancanvas04.jpgPrices per plan range from $2.99-$4.99, with plans for chairs, tables, Craftsman style planters, bars, book shelves and entertainment centers. Some of the designs are on the "eh" side, but many of the plans look intentionally simple, with easily reproducible surfaces and simple construction. Our favourite is the sofa with additional storage.

My favorites are the grid shelves and the square coffee table w/ nesting stools

I love this stuff. So mid-century mod! You could actually round the corners and make them more bump friendly ,too. I also see covering the top chair with some padding or foam and upholstering the whole piece.

I built a similar sofa back in the day. Same shape, except that the back of mine was actually a shallow bookcase as well. Magazine and book storage, sofa, guest bed - that baby did everything except make dinner! And all for the price of some plywood and a 30" cotton mattress.

Okay, so it weighed a zillion pounds.
