What a busy weekend we had. We spent all of Sunday in historic downtown again, this time participating in Dwell on Design's Downtown Los Angeles architectural tour (photos and post coming later). While exiting one of the units en route, we noticed what initially appeared to be a boutique design and furnishings store. On closer inspection, after also noticing the four-footed clientèle entering and exiting, we realized the shop was actually a pet store of impeccable style...
The P&P Pethouse boutique has all the typical offerings a well stocked pet shop, but takes the concept further...much further...by incorporating amusing touches like this indoor dog potty station next to their self-grooming stations for customers.
Love those feline totes. There's a canine version too.
That's Cosmo, resident guard dog and greeter, walking the grounds by the Pawbar, and occasionally stopping to give dog kisses for free. We recieved plenty.
Each corner of the store expresses an eye for design detail, like the vibrant green wallpaper lining shelves, the giant silhouette gracing the walls and tasteful layout of the whole store that seems just as appealing to those one two legs as those entering on four.
And how many pet stores have an art gallery in back?
by any chance is it Puss & Pooch? 'cause that would be a faaar better name

Now that the economy has forced me to dial down my spending, places like this are no longer in my ledger.

I actually live in the same building as this store, and since it moved in several months ago, the place has been busy every day it's open. Considering this is downtown LA, and it's a glorified pet store, that's quite an accomplishment. But with the thriving (and growing) art scene in the area and the many four-legged inhabitants of the nearby lofts, quirky, good-natured stores like this one (despite the name) are both essential to the area's re-emergence and a testament to its vitality.

When we first moved here, Pussy & Pooch's windows caught our eye from across the street. Inside it was a cool hang out kinda place that provided a nice refuge from the hot city. I liked the decor and the interesting products, so now I am a regular shopper for my two dogs (Stella & Fozzy) The store is great, so I am happy to see them on AT. Lee is always really nice and helpful. Yeah, it's a little spendy, but I would buy dog food & treats there any day over Ralph's, which is one of the only other options for some Urban Dwellers in the area. And the products that they carry- accessories and houses- are different and a cut above what you would see at a regular pet store. If I had a million bucks I would buy a lot of that stuff. But I don't so I will just appreciate and spread the word! :)
