Earth Day House Call: 737 Conserve House in Venice

In honor of Earth Day we wanted to highlight a house in our own neighborhood that was just completed last month. The 737 Conserve house was built with the goal of creating a home with as little environmental impact as possible, without sacrificing design and comfort.

737 adjusts to its environment: hot, cold, sunny, or rainy, in order to use as little energy and consume as little water as possible. Even though we boast great weather in Venice, it can still get super hot and this house knows how to adjust for it: it has shades that roll down automatically to block out the sun's UV heat and skylights that allow the hot air to escape or to keep the warmth in along with a green roof to help insulate and an efficient cooling system that will kick in if needed. Solar Power on the roof helps to keep the house from sucking energy from the grid and waterSense plumbing keeps water usage to a minimum. Plus the house was built using non toxic materials, glues, solvents, and paints to keep it free of toxins and all the materials were brought in locally so they avoided importing materials from far off lands to reduce the environmental impact of shipping.

Our favorite thing about the house (besides the amazing blooming green roof of course) is the lap pool. It's fed by an underground spring so it's fresh unclorinated water. On a day like today, we wouldn't mind a little dip.

Read more about the house on the 737Conserve website.

I normally don't do the boxy minimalist thing, but this is just OMG-awesome. Even before you count the econess (and econess is a big, big deal for me). I especially love the front planting... heh heh heh, that much I can probably replicate.

Love this; the pool alone did it for me. I so want something like this!

The pool is wonderful but, unless they are getting sea water to fill it, the water comes from the Colorado River, the Owens Valley, to Northern California, and with being in a serious drought in California the pool is about as green as striking matches in a Santa Ana Wind.

total green dream home. i can only imagine having a dinner party at that home with the pool decorated with floating candles. the rooftop is very backyard like. the solar panels covering the angled roof entirely are so efficient looking but also expensive. last but not least is the facade, very modern, yet green and simple. you will totally be amazed once that big wooden door/gate is opened.
