Despite writing about our favourite decor and gift shop down the street on numerous occasions, we've never had the chance to actually snap some photos of the new and improved Reform School, the classroom themed one-stop-shop until today. Operated by the dynamic duo of Billie and Tootie (makes you think that Mrs. Garrett works there too, huh?), and accompanied by crafting "home ec" instructor, Jenny Ryan, the shop is filled to the brim with design, decor and gift ideas for anyone between the age of 0 - 67¾...
Reform School recently located just a block over to a newer, larger space, and the ladies have taken advantage of the Sunset Junction spot to the fullest, each corner of the shop appointed with thrift store furniture finds that display the works of local artists, designers, books, gift cards, clothing and a myriad of home accessories that have made us top of the class on many occasions when presented with a gift giving social event. And be sure to take a closer look at the ceiling and the wallpaper...the store is a visual overload of awesome that reminds us of the slambook we created in jr. high (sans dirty jokes).
And starting this February, Reform School will be hosting a new craft class division, ReForm School: Home Ec. (classes run from 7-9pm weeknights):
- Sewing 101 (two 2-hour sessions where you will learn the basics & make an envelope-back pillow): 2/3 & 2/10 - OR - 2/17 & 2/24
- Reversible Wrap Skirt (soooo cute!! you must know basic sewing. three 2-hour sessions: 2/11, 2/18 & 2/25)
- Embroidery 101 (one 2-hr session: 2/6 - OR - 2/27
- Papier-Mache Brooches (two 2-hr sessions: 2/2 & 2/9
- Valentine's Charm Bracelets for Kids (one 2-hr session, starts @ 9:30am Saturday 2/7)
- Power Tool Empowerment Class for Women: Date TBD

cute store but so overpriced! I think they would sell stuff if it were priced reasonable. Location next to the Casbah is great though

SydneyBristow: their prices are pretty much in line with a small independent store, especially considering many of their items are handmade/crafted by locals. I admit, I don't go there looking for bargains and specifically for nicer items to gift, but I wouldn't say they're overpriced, competitively speaking.
And wait, if you're dining at Casbah...I love that place, but dining there is a bit hard on the wallet that we only go there for an occasional treat too :D

i'm just sayin, if they priced their cute stuff reasonable then people would be able to buy and not just browse. I really can't afford any of the lil boutiques around there except for Serifos (great jewelry), though I can afford a cup of coffee at Casbah.

SydneyBristow: I am not disagreeing that it would be nice if some of the things in there were more compatible with our budgets, but I also know nobody is raking in dollars over there and I'm more than willing to pay a little more than at a big chain for something special and supporting a local store/creators. I think if they brought their prices down to what you may think is reasonable, they might end up going out of business quickly. As someone who worked in the big-box product development segment for several years, I know profit margins on most boutique items are slim and have to be marked up just for the hope of profitability to cover costs. Nicer, smaller batch, handmade produced items just cost more. Then again, in this economy, maybe everyone is in browsing mode anyway (I know I am). It's not a great time to be an independent business in that regard.

I love this store, and agree with the other comments. I generally buy gifts here because of the prices. I support local businesses as much as possible. They have some really cute stuff.

I live all the way across the country but ordered a poster from them after finding them online. When I called after my computer did something funny while ordering, they were helpful and let me know what happened. So yeah, great customer service, the stuff shipped quickly, arrived unharmed, etc. I'll pay a little more for that.
