[This is the 4th life for this little table.]
When design inspiration strikes, it's hard not to act on it! During this tough economic time, priorities can definitely change and we've been thinking of ways to still satisfy your design craving with little or no budget at all. Enter an Apartment Therapy fave, Benita of Chez Laarson. Check out her fabulous inspiration after the jump.
Benita's 4th Life. The message is simple - give your old furniture and decor new life again with a move. Finding a new place in your home can breathe new life into old furniture while satisfying your design and resource needs.
Benita talks about a table that's moved physically in her home and remembers fondly the stages of this time. It began 11 years ago as a kitchen table for her family, moved to be the foundation for her home office, then off to the boatroom to become another desk and finally a sideboard as storage.
It's neat looking at these pieces in generations and when you think about them, memories spark of where you were in your life at that time. Kind of how a song places you in a moment.
Do you have a piece of furniture or a decor accent that has had many lives and uses in your home? Let us know and upload some photos in the Apartment Therapy LA Flickr pool.

My parents' old kitchen stool came with me to my first post-college apartment (they no longer needed it). Now, I have a really tiny kitchen, but it's the perfect height for my drafting table, so I repainted it to match.

I will soon be moving into my first solo place, and my parents are planning on giving me all the furniture I "decorated" as a kid, which is currently sitting in the basement... the old kitchen table I carved my name into & the bedroom set I accented with glow-in-the-dark star stickers. They're gorgeous pieces with a lot of history, so I can't wait to rehab them for my new place.

I bought a dining table that seated six to use as my pastry table which then became ---> office desk ---> laundry folding table ---> art studio table. I've even thought of making it my indoor potting table in my garage (next).

I've got these great chairs my grandmother regifted to my parents after she painted them bright pink and used them for ages...they used them for a while, tried stripping the paint off, failed, left them in the garage as extra chairs to use at bonfires...gave them to me and i painted them this nice pistachio color and sanded them.
they look like they came from shaggy chic :)
