Game Night!
A Fun and Affordable Way To Entertain At Home

030409_game01.jpgIf you are looking for a great idea at home and want or need to save some cash then consider starting a game night with friends and family. Laure mentioned a fun game night idea here and some of you readers have also suggested game night! Check out our fave game night game after the jump...

One of our favorite games is Catch Phrase - sort of hot potato meets charades. It's a great group game! Ever since our friends started a monthly game night a few months ago, it's become our favorite fun and affordable activity. We rotate a house each time and simply do drinks and apps - no need to host a whole dinner party.

What about you, Apartment Therapy, do you do a game night?

If so, what do you play?

We have a monthly team-scrabble game with our friends, which includes dinner. We rotate hosting, and the host choses the dinner theme and serves an entree. Guests bring side dishes, desert, and wine to support the theme.

We usually chat, then eat, then play -- the evening goes from about 7:00 pm to midnight.

Occassionally we mix it up and change the game. For the holidays we had a white elephant, and the "game" was stealing gifts. We also play pictionary but throw out the board and team overhead. Someone draws on a giant wall post-it, and the person who identifes the concept goes next. The more wine you have, the more fun that particuar game gets....

It usually turns into game night any time we have people over for dinner.

Loaded Questions provides answers you (or your friends or family) will have to live with for the rest of your life. Its hilarious and always fun. Apples to Apples is great too.

Apples to Apples, Balderdash, poker, SceneIt, Sequence - all fun, but can depend on who is there. ImagineIf was fun too, though I've only played it once. We also played a game called Liebrary that was a ton of fun. I think having friends over and playing a game is way more fun than any restuaurant. We need to do it more often.

POP 5 from the Cranium folks, always hilarious.

You choose if the opposing team should get more points to hum or act or draw or do a password style clue, for topics like TV, songs, fads, etc. If you know your opponents well it is great fun to force the tone deaf person to try and hum the theme to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

We have a game night every week (usually Friday or Sunday), restricted to people who actually enjoy playing games. We're in the Settlers franchise/Arkham Horror/Railroad Tycoon/Carcassonne/etc. set.

Favorite all time group game (especially if you play with creative, funny people): Balderdash. Tip: get the updated version that has five categories, not the original with just word definitions.

Runners-up:
-- Apples to Apples
-- Catch Phrase
-- Taboo
-- and an obscure one for media geeks: Tabloid Teasers (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/781)

My friends and I play mafia (sometimes called Werewolf) once every other week. All you need is a deck of cards to play! It gets intense, but never fails to be a ton of fun.

Apples to Apples or Settlers of Catan! My friends and I do game nights often. We also play charades or Celebrity.

I love catch phrase! it makes me really competitive, though...

old fashioned charades is good for getting people up and moving. I also love speed scrabble for a quieter evening.

My family and I LOVE playing games. One of our favorites has always been Loaded Questions. It's always fun guessing who said what and learning more about everyone you think you know so well. When I was in high school (about 5 years ago) me and my friends used to wait for my parents to get tired of playing and then we'd think of more scandalous questions to ask each other...:)

We have "No Technology Tuesday" every week at my house which normally turns into game night. We play bananagrams, which is an awesome alternative to scrabble. It uses your vocabulary less, but quicker.

My Tribe loves games. While we do not have a regular game night, several of us do host them throughout the year. Favorites seem to be Apples to Apples, Fluxx, Hoopla, and Settlers of Catan.

Some of us meet twice monthly to play Dungeons and Dragons and many of us cooperatively play video games. DDR parties are lots of fun too!

Dominoes!! My friends and I play about once a month in the winter. Sometimes we eat out first, but we always stop after a middle round and eat homemade dessert! We've been doing this for years now.

My roommates and I go head to head with a rival apartment about once a month. Nothing formal just wine and games. We rotate between CatchPhrase (best. game. ever), Baulderdash, Carnium or a combo of them. Although we are very competitive and there is often trash talking and end zone dancing, we rarely get through an entire game as our wine consumption/socializing to playing ratio is totally uneven. Always fun and you can do it in sweat pants if you like to be comfortable!

Monopoly for my family!

I have house rabbits, and when my boyfriend and I got the chess board out last week, they both came right over and started chucking pieces off the board! So cute (although they obeyed when I told them to stop).

Believe it or not, one of the best game nights my buds and I ever had was a Spongebob Squarepants UNO tourny! Special Edition UNO always has an extra wild card that makes the game 10 times longer and more complicated -- we had a freakin' blast.
