apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

#12 Jamie & Amy's Birds of a Feather Nest

Name: Jamie & Amy
Location: Austin, Texas
Type: 3 bedroom home, owned

Why I use color: Because we can't live without it. The bird-pattern wallpaper and soft blue paint have made what was a stark white room with soaring vaulted ceilings more intimate and personal - while the chocolate curtains and earthtone grey & brown doors keep it all from beeing too girly and twee. It's a reflection of both of our personalities, and it makes going to bed an event to look forward to every night.

2 Good color tips:

1. Don't forget the doors. We've painted every door throughout the house - grey, brown, orange, turquoise and steel blue. It's a fast, easy and cheap way to add a punch of color to any room.

2. Swap the small things out with the season. Once or twice a year we'll swap out accessories (pictures, bedspreads, vases, etc.) to change the accent color palette.

2 good color resources:

1. Fashion. If it looks good on, it'll look good as a palette for a room, too. And most paint shops can color-match a swatch of nearly anything.

2. Magazines. And we're not just talking about the shelter magazines - we keep a file of pages clipped from all different kinds of publications that we refer to when we're looking for inspiration.

In a long skinny room like that, the far wall could be painted a bright unusual color that would provide a stunning backdrop for the bedspread. I find colors pop most when juxtaposed with neutrals - and vice versa.

Love the Mibo wallpaper and the coordinating blue wall color.

I love the wallpaper. As much as I love the kukkula bed linens, the grey seems too cold for the room, and might be too much with the pattern of the wallpaper. It might add to the the room to have a solid warm colored duvet cover.

There's that side of the bed problem. Putting the bed the other way toward the back would let us see the room. I love that wallpaper too! Great start.

I love the blue walls and the wallpaper and I really like that there is blue in the wallpaper. I also like that you chose to contrast your dark wood with blue. I don't like the grey of the duvet, though. Maybe if it was a solid color?

I think I love this room, but it's not photographed well.

Congrats on having a great place to sleep!

Pretty bedspread!

I don't know what's going on in this room. I find it strange to see the doors painted, but not the trim. Maybe the wall color doesn't work with the wood color. As soon as I saw the rug, I knew it would be in TX!

Are you kidding?

Looks like a good door to allow in an outside decorator.

Alas, once again, I gave this a no as the two pictures don't really give me a sense of how color is used in the space, other than the blue.

You have to be jokin. That rug is hideous. It is animal hide! Which means skin ripped off of a living cow!
