apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

#13 Lizz's "Warm & Handsome" Apartment

Name: Lizz
Location: Plano, Texas
Type: 1 bedroom, rented

Why I use color: I'm a graphic designer, so color is part of my everyday world; however, in this interim smaller apartment I chose not to paint the walls because of the short time period living here, but wanted to apply color through use of accessories and artwork (my own painting and photography). The italian scarf/pillow and burnt orange Donna Karan bedspread & chocolate brown bed throw set the color palette; I then accented with vintage finds: (orange teapot, brown donut phone and retro atomic lamps) nature finds: (the Australian "twig ball" & wallaby jawbone!) and curiosity finds : the Japanese prime ministers tea mug as pencil holder, and Dutch poster given to me in an art store in Australia that i had framed. The artwork which I already had ties things together (Hong Kong taxis photograph, Santa Fe photograph, 'Live Nudes' Pittsburgh photograph, art deco flapper painting and others) I tend toward warmer, "handsome" colors in the home as opposed to very feminine, girly colors-I find them more urban and grounding to live amongst. I have an eight year old daughter who loves the rich colors and unusual accessories we gather.

2 Good Color Tips:

1. Try to stick with one main item/color grouping that you find inspiration from (for example in these pics, the vintage italian art deco scarf that I made into a pillow case). Carry through with eclectic finds in corresponding colors.

2. Most people cannot visually process more than three combined colors at once, so best to keep it to three or less main focus colors.

2 Good Color Resources:

1. Independent films (Lost in Translation, Amelie, and many others) and design-oriented hotels inspire me...

2. Graphic, interior and industrial design magazines (especially non-USA versions-always a good source for how people in other cities with different light & climates live with color!)

The bedroom shot is one of the only entries where white is the wall "color" but the first thing that stands out is the use of yellow, gold and orange and brown. I didn't see that the room was white until I stopped and looked at it again. That is good use of color.

Good job! You have some great interiors in your future. So glad you're not afraid to go bold.

This entry uses the similar 70s colors that "Justine's 70s Homage Living Room" but here they are much warmer, complementary, and fresh. I also liked Lizz's comments about acquiring her pieces. Now that's the way to do it!

To me the space feels a little unfinished--but that isn't to say I don't really, really like it. I love seeing how renters can use color to personalize even if they can paint. Also, we have seen very little yellow in this contest, so it's refreshing (and a lovely mustard yellow at that). I think the room might possibly benefit from more art work, or grouping the art so that it looks less lost in the sea of white. In the second picture, the lamp seems a bit overscaled for the desk ad perhaps a reading lamp would fit better. But it's a lovely room and I suddenly have the impulse to lay in bed and drink tea this weekend :) I vote in contention.

you should have been in the smallest/coolest. I like your furniture and curtains. Gromets are cool!
Thanks,

I agree with Laura's comment..You almost do not notice that the walls are white...the colors are BEAUTIFUL- very well done !

love the color scheme and the art. Couldn't stand having the TV at the foot of my bed, though, but that's just how I roll.

The bed area does look very '70s, but in a good way. Very inspirational use of color for those of us who can't paint our walls. Overall very well done!

See.. I thought this was a nice entry, but the first thing I noticed was the white. I think the curtains could be a different color - something that ties in, but breaks from the burnt-orange palette - even a straight neutral like grey. Just SOMEthing to break up the white and orange.

What a coincidence. Last night I pulled out this quilt kit that I bought a couple years ago that is from the 70's. It would so make a nice bedspread for this room. Orange, Yellow, Brown and White.

Wow, this has got to be the snazziest apartment in all of Plano. Way to go Lizz! (And thank the god of your choice you don't live in Lubbock.)

I'm not sure what the buzz about this being an insta-finalist. It's yellow bed coverings with white walls. I see one color, I would have liked to see more color or more of the monochromatic look carried further.

Lizz, where did you get those lights on table top next to t.v.? Those are great!

Like that lamp in the second pic!

Thanks for all the comments everyone-

Maryam: the rectangular lamp and the bed tray table are from Z Gallerie (www.zgallerie.com)

Sydney: not sure if you mean the bed (colors or the scarf pillowcase) or the bed itself looks 70's...but it is (new) from Eurway (i think the website is www.eurway.com)

Rudopal: the "atomic" lamps I bought in some random antique store...that was mostly not this style! Lucky to find a pair. But you could search in ebay under "atomic" or "retro", think I may have seen similar ones on ebay before.

Apparently, just this much color puts a lot of people out of their comfort zones. This is a bold color, and therefore makes it a worthy entry! Maybe this is just the start for Lizz.

Judging by the items for sale on eBay, 70s yellows & oranges are in. Click my name for an example.

No doubt about it, pbphoenix. Watch out for avocado appliances, next!

Actually, I doubt that, most likely the palette will be teamerd up with blue-green.

Anyway, this is wonderful. I like it the best so far--and I'm glad the curatins are white. Otherwise this serene space would be all chopped up.

I love this room...the only thing I would do differently is paint the walls. I'm a color feign so I would need color on the walls. I understand why you didn't paint the walls though. Beautiful! :)

It's weird how this looks soooo 70's, but still works. I think it's in the use of just the right shades in a very limited palette. Less is more!

I think the clock is hung too high and I might have gone with a diffent colour, maybe black...but overall the colour palate and design work ~ nicely done.

This is as successful in its way as the complete reverse kind of treatment that Marlon's Green Pad was in the 1st Annual Smallest, Coolest contest.

In his case, he did color on the walls with black-and-white everywhere; here, she left the walls white and did color in the accents.

A VERY satisfying, pulled-together look. You should be VERY proud of yourself.

Can you imagine what would happen if she went ahead and painted?

Can you share the source of your dresser?

hi-

Hanifa,

it's actually a sideboard from ikea! :~)

I think the color choices add to the rooms' warmth and fun, without being too kitschy or immature. The strategic use of color also gives interest to the room while staying within the limits you have (not painting the walls). It says you are creative but not a snob, and I can easily see you and your kid enjoying and "living" in the room.

This one gave me serious envy pangs. I try not to drool over other people's possessions, but between the wall-mounted CD player and the donut telephone . . . . I love how this space is simple without being spartan, yet functional without being cluttered. It takes a lot of work to get to that magic spot (I've never managed). I like contrast--I'm fine with white walls--and there's just the right amount here. Also, I love the warm palette--golds, browns--and how everything works together without being drab.

P.S. You know, if you rent there are many advantages to leaving the walls white. For example, you won't have to paint again when you move, saving labor, time, and money. If you use furnishings for color, you can take your color scheme with you. And I don't know where people got the idea that having white walls means an apartment has no color. That's SO wrong.

posted by JefferyK on 2006-10-14 16:56:59

Nice job Lizz...and I personally feel that white walls are always a great option. Good use of the IKEA "inspiration" without overkill...less is ALWAYS more! Love the very retro golds and browns.

i'm glad i read your “why i use color” statement. understanding that you limited yourself and the design of the room with only accessories and furniture makes this a very worthy and, I think, a successful entry.

thanks for the constructive comments so far, everyone. i realize i set myself a boundary (of not painting much this time, this apartment) but set about to be cohesive despite that. glad you get it!

Hi Lizzie, Wow - I absolutely love it! As a graphic designer myself, I feel that you really captured a mood with your colors... It is warm and inviting while maintaining a high energy and "now" look. Great use of yin/yang elements and colors - the balance is fantastic. I also loved your collections and finds - each holds a special place and memory which gives them a life of their own. You are truly talented! Keep up the amazing work :-)

This is a really good example of proper room-dressing for photos and a nice use of fall hues.
