apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

#24 Zach & Cyndi's Retreat of Natural Calm

Name: Zach & Cyndi
Location: Los Angeles (Chinatown), CA
Type: Home - own

Why I use color: I use color to give my eyes something to look forward to in the morning, and something to send me off to sleep feeling right. The contrast of the green (Behr Asparagus) with the natural woods of the floor and accents give the room a relaxing atmosphere. The irregular shelves break up the walls and draw attention to the oil paintings, wooden puzzles, and Japanese lanterns.

2 Good color tips:

1. Avoid the temptation to test a hundred different colors. One gets lost in all the choices. Pick a color you love and you'll love the room.

2. The darker faux techniques are impossible. A lesson in hubris.

2 good color resources:

1. The grocery store: from fruits and vegetables, to the shampoo aisle.

2. The gallery: sometimes a great painting can paint a whole room.

Looks like the location needs to be updated.

I love the color combo! It's very similar to what I did in our powder room.

Adding an area rug would probably bring all the pieces together.

Love the art over the bed - can you tell us about it? Woodcuts?

posted by errrik on 2006-10-19 12:52:28

I like the colour choice for the walls, and think the room as a whole comes together well... One quibble: Could you not paint the air vent green also? It really sticks out.

I agree ... a big, natural-material area rug would pull it together and soften up the room.

I love wood floors, but this is so wide-open and shiny it almost looks like a dance studio! ;-)

It makes me hungry for avocados.

Looks like a baby ate pea soup, then threw up all over your wall!

Something looks strange here. Is the a shutter-covered window and French door leading to a hallway?

I love the simplicity and calmness of the room. It makes me want to take a nap

Oooo very pretty! Love the lighting and the green! I might add just a splash of your orange or blue colors (from the two books on the shelf) somewhere else -- when looking from the bed toward the french doors it's all green/brown/white. Maybe an orange orchid would do the trick.

First thing I thought was that it needs a rug. Then re-submit, and I will vote "insta-finalist" because the colors are great!

P.S. (I haven't voted yet)

Great decor! Who was the designer?

To me, the white air vent makes the room.

Our cats would LOVE it if we had a rug in the room. Not in a good way...

Thanks for such nice comments :)

Is that a WIN platform bed? Do you have more pictures of it? I'm considering getthing that same bed but have yet to see it in person or in a non-catalog setting.
Oh, and I love the girraffes by the mirror.

posted by Victoria on 2006-10-19 15:06:40

That is the WIN bed. I'm pretty happy with it. The integrated lights are just for show, but they do look cool. I don't have any other photos, but I'll certainly take more if I'm a finalist ;)

What wonderful use of color and space. I love the wood tones and how they play off the walls. And the simple yet striking artwork and shelving make the room so warm. I can understand the issue with a rug and pets. You must be a very loving and caring person to take fuzzy family members into consideration, even at the expense of your own comfort. Great room!

really nice space, aqnd the color is pretty, but somethign about the scale/placement of your artwork is throwing me off (particularly the wall with the floating shelves). maybe try a little less to "fill the space," instead focusing on making the peices you have stand out.

Lovely...just lovely. Way to use a different green. Peaceful, calm, lovely.

I really like what I see but where do they put their stuff? 2 people and a minimal amount of storage space.

I love the combination of colors in the first picture with the bed. I especially love the two pictures above the bed. Instead of an area rug, maybe a love chest or bench would be nice.
I'm not sure about the second picture. You don't have to paint all four walls green. Maybe one or two of the walls on the second picture can be a different color (e.g. a darker green or even a shade of brown).

Wow -- I love it! I especially like the way the other colors on your bookshelves pop against the green. I can't wait to design some pillows for you!

Great job ~

That green is so zen...I am feeling very calm now;-)

Peaceful, but no great use of color. And judges? Would love to see a percentage of entrants who used a green in their wallcolor.

I love the green and I love the cut outs over the bed. But, this place looks too West Elm to me. Usually when all pieces of a room are from the same place, the decor looks rushed and unthoughtful. A room needs time to evolve, this was done too hastily. You're on the right track with your simplicity, but you need to study Asian design just a bit more. The shelves contradict what you have done. In Asian design, the scale is low, art needs to be brought down to a lower level so it can be admired. Maybe putting the shelves in a line rather than staggering them? With a little tweaking you will have a beautiful room.

Actually Peggy, a lot of stuff from Crate and Barrel too in this room. :)

This is really just one color, not much variation or other colors. When other entrants showed this, it didn't get the votes like this one did. What's with that? Am I missing something? Nice green, but that's it. I'm not that impressed to vote insta-finalist, or even in contention.

I really love the color, it's just so fresh and beautiful. You have some great furniture and I love the art and shelves by the bed. But I just feel like the room is missing a little something. Not something to take the focus away from the great color, just something, like a rug with just a little color in it.

Where did the dressers come from. I love the color of the walls -- it's a much more creative green than the neons and puke greens we've seen in other entries.

I also love the wood cut.

posted by jlt on 2006-10-20 14:09:51

the "art work" above the bed isnt a wood cut, its a candle screen from crate & barrel, made of metal

i like the color of the room, but the pieces feel disconnected, especially the shelves and the mirror, why is the mirror over the dresser at all? i like the furniture though, and the colors are great, just a little re-arranging could make this even better

Please please tell me where you got the giraffes! I love them!!!

I love the way the green and the contrasting tones of the wood work together. It all looks very tranquil, yet cheerful. I know all too well that cats and rugs are not a good combination, but with the clean-lined furniture and lovely floors I think it's fine without a rug.

I don't quite get what's going on to the left of those French doors in the second photo, however. There just seems to be too many things in that corner, but I think the way they are arranged is mostly to blame. What's behind those white louvered doors? The way the dark chest is pushed into the corner seems to emphasize them, and also makes it look as if shoved the chest in the corner because you didn't quite know what to do with it. If you pull the chest out of the corner, lining up the right end of it with the right side of the mirror, it would give the mirror more weight, and would tie those two dark pieces together. It would also give that corner some more visual "breathing room," and make the arrangement look intentional.

I'd also paint that white heating vent cover green; it's really distracting.

Oh, and while I'm at it, I hope you have that art over the bed anchored securely to the walls, in case of earthquakes...

love the shelves, love the color, love this room, but there is no "use" of color here.

Yawwwn. Looks like they copied the design of the room from a West Elm/Pottery Barn/CB2 catalog.

I love it! I am in the process of doing a similar color theme in our master bedroom and this confirms my choices! Thanks!

The low level shelfing and dark/light wood mix breaks the rules and still works nicely.
