apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

#26 - Blake's Calm and Inspiring Den

Name: Blake
Location: Highland Park, CA
Type: 3 bdrm/own

Why I use color:I feel that color should both calm and challenge a person. It should provide a sense of peace while at the same time be able to inspire a person to think and work creatively while in that particular room. This room was once the master bedroom of the house and I've converted it into my Den. It had these beautiful brown, built-in wood bookcases, which I felt a deep green could only add to. I painted the mantle white to increase the contrast between the elements... the wood, the brick, the wall. The thing I like the most about my house is that there is one spot when you look straight ahead, you can see three different rooms and three different colors at once.

2 Good color tips:

1. I'm a big fan of color on color. I use wall art that is of a similar shade to accent both the art and the color of the wall it is hung on.

2. I think the name of the color should bring you just as much enjoyment as the color itself. I painted my bedroom Taliesin Blue because it invoked an image of Frank Lloyd Wright for me. This den color green is Italian Basil. My hallway is Golden Retriever. My office is Friar.

2 Good color resources:

1. Old Magazines. It's great to track the popularity of colors over the past few decades. Especially in advertisements.

2. Flea Markets. It's really easy just to browse and see such a wide variety of home furnishing colors at a flea market.

You have used color, but I don't feel a synergy with your choices. Maybe if I saw it in realtion to your furniture....

I like the yellow, but I really like that deep green wall, it seems to go with the style of the home. Very nice.

First of all the hockey poster is disgusting. Plus the books come off as someone who wants to seem smart but isn't. Also who still uses vhs, do you also have an 8 track. One last comment, Wilco sucks.
peace

This isn't bad, but I'm not a big fan either. However, Ethan, what are you 12?

Ouch, Ethan. What, did Blake not invite you over to his party with all the other cool kids? And I'm sorry you didn't make the hockey team, man. Blake - it's nice to see a single (?) guy take color risks. Your green living room reminds me of a lodge, though. Not my style, but not entirely ugly. The wall colors go well with the floor tone. not insta but not no way.

Does anyone else think Ethan is the kid that was picked last to play kickball, who is currently living with his parents because he is at a third grade reading level (basically Barbie comics).

the green room is sexy in a blueblood frat boy kind of way.

You are a braver soul than I! If I'd known you were such a color lover, I would have had you over to my house for advice a long time ago!

I think there's room for improvement here, but itlooks like there are alot of things in this room that have meaning to you, which is nice. Oh, that Ethan sounds like a real douche bag. Wait is that one word or two?

I love the bold color decisions. You have opted to celebrate the hallway, rather than downplaying its presence as a mere walking area. With your muted room tones and vibrant hallway, you have created an apartment that encourages the eye to wander and explore. Well done!

It's got good basic values, but we're really only seeing walls here.

Is Ethan smoking crack? I love the green against white combo as well as the even alignment of the bookshelves. Love all the color contrasts.

Oh yeah, and Wilco rocks.

That's right mofos i'm BAAAACK. I wanted to clear the air a little bit for you backwoods yokels. I went to Yale so in my professional opinion Wilco sucks the big one and this guy's place makes me want to retch. By the way for your info I was the captain of the football, lacrosse and debate team so I think I know what I'm talking about when it comes to interior design. Besides even if I don't who cares because I am totally rich and drive a sweet H3. Peace Bitches.

Ethan must have a really small $*%@#$ !!
He is the kind of guy that gives Yale a bad name.
I have been in Blake's house and it is lovely! Masculine, warm, and subtle at the same time...
Bravo!

macho man = dark walls?
i don't think so.
all so-called gentlemen's decor is done with chocolate or forest green walls. or tartan. enough already.

Man, this Ethan is obviously crying out for attention. Dude are you confusing this site with myspace, no one cares about what you drive or where you're parents obviuosly wasted their money in an attempt to educate you. Stick to comments
related to the subject at hand: fall colors. Oh , this apartment is awseomse it feels very fall with the warm green wall and i really like the contrasting yellows in the hall.

i agree with lee. usually hallways are forgotten in decoration. occasionally they are a place for photos that don't fit elsewhere, and most often dark. but blake has made the hallway a warm and bright center of his home, a glowing centerpiece that directs guest to the different parts of the house. i think that is more original than picking the right curtain for your living room.

posted by annie on 2006-10-22 21:39:53

the color's are strong and warm - I'd like to see more!

posted by edwina on 2006-10-23 17:53:22

I think Ethan's comments are downright rude. The objective is to critique a room design, not attempt to insult someone's intelligence. What is wrong with using VHS if that is one's preference in the free world!! And books are very much a part of a room design, regardless of whether they have been read or not.

I love the Hockey Poster. And I love the range of color he uses.
There is a lot of style here for a dude's house. I would love to have sex with him! Seriously, he must be hot.

posted by Ceri on 2006-10-23 21:23:42

so here's what i'm thinking...the house, it fuckin' blew me away. the position of the three candles in front of the fire - genius. the way the candles represented twenty-two ounce tall boys of Pabst, even more genius. The Wilco poster, mediocre. The board game at the botton right of the picture...hmmm. Is that a "Saved by the Bell" boardgame? By the way, did you know Screech made a porn called "Saved by the Smell?"

I admire your courage Blake, but the country club vibe is just too overwhelming.

It's all just so:

"Johnson...You, Me, and the back nine!"

posted by Alli on 2006-10-24 14:40:56

Wow! Lots of negative votes on this one! I don't quite get that because my first impression was "ooh!"

I really enjoy this one. The color feels warm and soothing.

posted by Rob on 2006-10-24 14:49:33

I personally think the colors go together with each other well, and the room itself feels solid. And I like the green in the posters corresponding to the green on the wall.

posted by olya on 2006-10-24 15:35:48

Wilco: Love
Hockey Poster: Love

The green, the brown and the yellow work so well together. Congrats Blake.. a beautifully masculine color palette.
All you are missing are some vintage tennis rackets... oh so Royal Tennenbaums. Are you Richie?

posted by Emeline on 2006-10-24 16:52:51

Man. I can't believe I had to work the night of the Wilco show. What a bummer.

If comments such as these posted here, with an exception of a few continue there will be a general down grading of this site. Ego and dollar should not be the most forward part of a discussion in this venue, you will kill it. No one commented on the exquiste light from the brown walled room. A den, in the classic sense is male, personal and cliche, but it is also warm, safe and sexy. The yellow alerts, energizes and the other colors invite by contrast discovery of the quiet colors. Posters are a poor choice because of size and quality, not because the persons posters are not of your liking.

i think ethan is a fake! i think he is just trying to create a bunch of pointles discusion. blake's room is very nice. it is very masculine and invitng! everyone just needs to ignore ethan because he is faking. no one can be that mean. just focus on blake's rooms and give constructive comments. blake, i enjoyed looking at your rooms. they create a calm atmosphere great for lounging and hanging out!

Lorelai got it. Sorry folks and sorry blake, but i was bored at work and decided to do a bit of trolling to see how long it would take someone to figure out. i know it was a mean thing to do but my job can be really boring sometimes. The only thing i said that i actually believe or that is true is that i don't like wilco. I still think they suck, but to each his own. peace

Something about this is so alluring...it's different, but the yellow and brown work. Just wait- I predict west elm will do it in 2 years and then you can re-enter...
