Name: Deana & Nadim
Location: Los Feliz, CA
Type: 1 bedroom duplex, rental
Why I use color:
Transplanted from the east coast, our house in Philadelphia was all white - and it worked really well. Once we hit Southern California with it's lush vegetation, killer sunsets, and "colorful" characters, we had to surround ourselves with rich, daring colors. Our house inside feels as vibrant and varied as the city does outside.

2 Good color tips:
1. Stay away from being too matchy-matchy. A house with diversity, that tells a story and draws the eye around the room, is always more interesting and important-feeling. Take a risk with color selection...and don't be afraid to try low & no-VOC (eco-friendly) paints. They're available everywhere and provide great coverage!
2. Highlight your color by mixing in pieces with varied metallic and mirrored finishes (mix chrome, brass, & bronze). Not only will they stand out against both bold and subtle colors, but they'll reflect light and play off walls and textiles.
2 good color resources:
1. Vintage wallpapers and fabrics are great ways to discover a new palette. You're sure to find unexpected color combinations that will inspire you to take a more daring direction.
2. Everyone's saying it and i totally agree - nature, nature, nature...plants, animals, water, etc. you can find the richest, most amazing colors in & around your home. I could do an entire house based on the colors of my siamese cat.
nice kelly green on the wall! that's a brave brave color. my only change....I just want to schooch up that fun yellow painting about 7-10" higher so it uses the wall shape as a frame itself. just me being art damaged.
really like that bit of turquoise mixed in--would have never put those colors together. super funky
This is my favorite entry so far. I think this is Apple Green done right - mixed with some other shades of green and yellow, a little black & white, some metallics and neutral furnishings (couch, side and cocktail tables). In addition to the color, I also love the highly ecclectic blend of very modern with more traditional pieces. It's kind of Jonathan Adler meets Vicente Wolf. Stunning!
My fav entry to date as well - a completely inspired use of color and the first entry that I felt could compliment both masculine and femine tastes.
And I'm swooning over your fab yellow painting.
Love the painting where it is - people hange art too high imho. drives me bats - this is per.fect.
AT West posted Deana's interior design site - I bookmarked it b/c of all the great color!
Best so far. I want to shop with you!
Overall, not my taste in decorating but I love green, and I think this is an example of it used very skillfully. The blue Panton chairs peeking out from around the corner are a lovely surprise and are an unexpected complement (design- and color-wise) to the rest of the interior. Great job!
LOVE this. Can we have a full house tour?
I LOVE the wall colour, couch and painting combo. I dunno about the blue accents- It wouldn't be something I choose- but it really works here.
Great job- I also want to see a full house tour!
Oh- and who is the painting by? It's gorgeous.
This is gorgeous! In addition to the colors, I really like all of the shapes. My favorite entry so far.
thanks for all of the wonderful comments. my wife is a truly talented designer. not quite a house tour, but there are a few more images of our house as well as a few of deana's other projects on her website greenwithglamour.com.
the painting was done by los angeles born artist lee reynolds most likely sometime in the sixties. we found it on one of our shopping trips in palm springs.
I love the use of color and the eclectic mix of objects and furniture.
now this is my kind of apt. colorful but relaxing, elegant and fun. i'm a HUGE analagous color fan and this is a tremendous example.
and i am totally coveting all of your side tables.
green is one of my favorite colors in interiors, and that green is one of the most gorgeous ones i've seen. it really makes the painting pop. nicely done.
i groaned when i saw the first picture-- "more green?)
but the blue accents (is that a blue and white "zebra" rug?) the animal prints, the sweet painting AND a kitty cat? I'm sold! very cool. thanks for sharing!
Oh... I literally moaned with happiness when I saw the first picture. Now I know what my dream interior looks like. Oh dear, I love the color combos so much it hurts. The shades of green and then all of a sudden that bright saturated turquoise in the chairs.
Art hung too high is one of my pet peeves, so I agree that the picture is perfect where it is. Had it been centered between the couch and the ceiling, I would have mentally corrected it to its current location.
I love this one, although I am not a fan of patterns, especially animal prints. I love the pottery. Where did you get the little round white vase on the coffee table?
I want this paint color in my place!! I REALLY love the addition of bold prints on the windows mixed with a cool blue color of chairs.
A professional at work was immediately apparent. Definitely stands out. Great furniture pieces/choices. Nice lamps too.
I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOVVVVVVVVVVEEEEEEEEEEE IT! I'm more of an observer and don't usually post but I couldn't resist. I absolutely dig your style. Thanks for sharing.
great job with the colors. will you do my house? love it all.
I love your room and fun finds--especially the large painting on the living room wall since we had one just like it in our house growing up.
Sandra
Note to self: green is trendy. But this entry illustrates that skilfull use of colour is more than just having a wall painted in whatever the trendy colour-du-jour is. This is a gutsy and complex colour scheme that totally works.
Fabulous! The textiles make me so happy. Art hanging is subjective and up to the owner, who will enjoy it more than anyone else and should put it where they damn well please. But since I work at the Getty and think I know more than I probably do, I would raise it to give it the proper framing room to breathe. It is lovely and deserves its own space. As is, imho, it recedes into the couch and draws attention to the pillow. Would be more impactful to allow more of the green between the similar colors of the painting and furniture. Then the art would be given more time to be observed, rather than the eye just falling into the couch.
Best yet.
That table and polka dot box have me SOLD!
LOVE IT!
I like the way this color works. I have the same green in my living room, "jungle moss green" but yours looks so sophisticated and elegant with the art and furniture.
That painting above the sofa has found its perfect home. It's perfect there. PERFECT! And, in a vacuum, it's not a painting I would love, but it's perfect.
I completely agree with Ksenia about how specifically skillful the use of color here is, and how it's NOT just a painted wall. Everything in here works beautifully; and not just in color. Shapes and textures and everything.
I just love this.
I too have a bright green livingroom with some yellow art, and have been shopping for a zebra rug! Still, our places look completely different. But these parallels, and the risks you took, are inspiring. I am most impressed with the unexpected turquoise in the rug. Bravo!
a HOUSE TOUR please, please!
This is wonderful, sexy, and just all around gorgeous. Love the way you've layered colors and the surprising dashes of blue. Bravo!
End the contest now. Winner. Bold, fun, exciting, but not too much or disjointed. Very well thought out. Was a source given yet for those great side tables? Very Kelly Wearstler Viceroy. I remember reading that she saw a painting like this one that was too expensive to put into the Viceroy Palm Springs, so she just copied it herself for the rooms to save money. That would be a great project to try with this painting if the price tag was too high. Who is the artist? The green and yellow is a fantastic combo. I also love the jungle leaves on the curtains. Well done!
Energetic and marvelously sophisticated. A+++
nice diggs... wish i was your neighbor!!!
gorgeous place, very bold color choices, but you really pull it off well. but i have to agree with rs about the placement of the painting (and yes, people DO tend to hang art too high, but i think the whole room would look a bit more balanced if the artwork was moved up about 2 inches).
Now this is style.
There are few GREAT rooms that have style, and a really good use of color in this contest. this one has it all. you have my vote.
Deana/Nadim,
where did you get this wonderfull sofa?
I love the living room: it's fantastic and whimsical and also very, very elegant.
Though beauty is in the eye of the beholder and I am certain Deana and Nadim love their place, I was not so keen on the dining room chairs or their color. Instead, I would have liked something white and yellow to mirror the painting over the sofa. Also, I would have stayed away from the trendy dining room curtains. But at least they're only curtains and can be changed when they go out of style (quite soon, I should think.)
The sofa is fantastic, as is the moorish table. This couple is so creative.
This is truly amazing. The touches of turquoise sold me. Can I say they have a terrifically sophisticated sense of colour and how to use it?
I love those curtains, too. I would have them and keep them even if they went out of style yesterday. Which they did, about 60 years ago of yesterdays.
House tour, definitely, please.
Can we see more of your house?????
I love love love these pictures. If I had the talent, skill, and pocketbook I can imagine myself in a place like this. Fantastic!
What is the name of the green paint color?
Love it mane!!! Excellente. I see that the cat has the best seat in the house. This'as gotta be a winner right here. Good job... all around.
Definitely my favorite. I absolutely love the colors and your blending of modern and vintage pieces. Fantastic composition - I want to hang out there! I plan on moving to LA soon, and I will be contacting you!!!!! Thanks for the inspiration and ideas.
who's the artist on the yellow painting
I'm a graphic designer, and I deal with color daily. The green walls mixed with the blue zebra skin, leopard, and black/white graphics makes me uneasy. I don't think I could ever live in a house with this much visual over stimulation. I appreciate the attempt at boldness, but this is just too much.
where did you find the wonderful laps??
hi everyone,
thanks so much for all the compliments and constructive comments... i am loving this contest! now to answer some questions...
being a proponent of recycling furniture - just about everything in our home was previously used.
the sofa - purchased by my grandmother 40 yrs ago, re-upholstered 4 yrs ago (though i've recently seen similar at thrift stores)
all the tables, lamps, cart, leopard print chairs, lucite chair - picked up at flea mkts, antique shops, thrift stores, etc.
small round vase on cocktail table - jonathan adler (as is most of the pottery in sight - what can i say? i'm a fan.)
the large painting is by california artist lee renyolds (circa 1960's). we found it at the 101 antique mall in palm springs, but my neighbor has a similar LR that he found at a thrift store.
the turquoise zebra print rug - i painted on the back of linoleum remnant.
cheers!
This place is IT. It's the only one I've commented on because it is truly glamorous and homey feeling at the same time. I hope you win -you deserve it. Awesome website, BTW. Good luck to you both!
I am a big fan.
Great mix of modern and classic furniture! Really emphasizes the modern paint! Great job!
This is probably the best entry that I have seen.
I think this is my favourite entry. All of the entries that I really love have the following elements:
- colour scheme that has more than one colour
- doses of neutrals to rest the eye (especially white)
- mixture of textures and a touch of pattern
- trendy colours with an unexpected twist
- unique furnishings and decorations
- well lit and well photographed
wow. that green wall with the white couch and yellow painting bowled me over. awesome. I could definitely leave out some of the stuff you have going on in the apartment, but that's just my taste... to me it feels a little too showy, but it is so fun. You have a very particular and definite taste, and it is very very evolved! My favorite color green. love it love it love it.
i think that this is the greatest entry in the contest, for some reason though there is no way to submit votes for this contestant. does anyone know why?
Come on, guys! How many different styles and periods are in this room? It's a total zoo of furniture in there: the blue 60's dining chairs, the Chinese/Moroccan/whatever side table, the antique-y chiar, the hollywood glamour couch, the modern transparent ghostly chair with white cushion in the second picture. This is a contest about _stylish_ use of color, not flea market galore!
I love eclectic and this room is fun and interesting, but there's a little too much going on for my senses. The blues and greens are nice but I wish that little white wall shelf would disappear.
This seems very Spanish at the end of the '50s to me. Which is lovely. Keep up the fun decorating.
Aw, finally an entry with personality, diversity, and originality. My only complaint would be that the 'pagoda' style side table is too large for the space. I'd replace it with something that doesn't compete so much with the other pieces. Well done.
I have a very similar couch, also bought by my grandmother in the 60s. I need to get mine recovered, but the champagne brocade upholstery is still lovely if a little threadbare by now. I just thought that was a neat coincidence.
As daring as Kelly Wearstler, as playful as Jonathan Adler. From one interior designer to another, GREAT JOB!
Congratulations, Deana and Nadim! Can't wait to see the other Honorable Mentions and the list of finalists.
The first picture is worthy of a shelter magazine spread.
This apt. is vibrant, bold, girly-yet-grown-up, hip, and classy with cool touches of retro here and there. This looks to be a winner to me; great job!
Can you tell me anything about that painting? My father-in-law has one very similar and we can't read the signature. Is it worth any $$. Where did you get it? Thanks in advance.
OOps. should have read the Comments and then I would have read who the painting was by. I was just excited to see another!
i love, LOVE your place.... hope to see more:)
