apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

#41 - Miss Rock's Colour Obsession

Name: Miss Rock
Location: Moorpark, CA
Type:1 bedroom/Rent

Why I use color: I love to bring like colors and tone on tones together as my base color scheme. Then I'll use a few accents around the room for interest to keep the eye flowing. I have been known to change my wall color somewhat obsessively. I find it is one of the more inexpensive ways to drastically change a room. Try painting different sections of a room different shades of one color for depth. If you can't make up your mind on one color then use them all! If it makes you happy then you can surely find a way to make it work.

2 Good color tips:

1. Go with your emotions and gut. If you think that shade of red is too bright, then it probably is.

2. We all make mistakes. Once you start painting that wall and you realize that it is going to be too overwhelming to live with the color you chose, then just put down the brush and walk away. Walk straight back to the paint store and get a color that makes you happy.

2 Good color resources:

1. The produce section of your local grocery store.

2. A really great fabric or textile store.

Hey, is that a fabric panel on your wall? It almost looks like an optical illusion or crochet;-)

Is that a dala horse? Awwww makes me remember my mother's dala collection. I like the mosaic green wall treatment. Can you explain what you did here? Good job!

wow! i would never of thought to do such a pattern on my wall. a cute modern twist on a quilt design but it works well with the color choices. it's very creative. did you paint that? i did a wall a few years back with the same concept but random colors and no design and it took me a full weekend to do. it came out great though. kudoos!

The photos are just unfortunately not good enough quality to get a good idea of the usage of color, but I like the toys!

The quilt paint technique is brilliant! I think the colors probably look great, but the photos are just so bad!

thank you everyone for your questions and comments. yes i do agree that the photos turned out horribly. i do not have a digital camera and had very little time to borrow one and take pictures with what i had. i wish i had photos that gave it some justice.

yes, the design was done with acrylic paints and a lot of patience and effort. it took me a little under 40 hours to do and about $20 in supplies. i'm unfortunately in between homes and have most of my belongings packed up so the rest of the room is not really furnished (unless you consider boxes furnishings) i just wanted to create a wall treatment that was colorful & inexpensive. i just wanted to enter my design to hear some critiques and maybe some words of encouragement. there are some beautiful designs of complete rooms being entered this year and know that i may not have a strong entry but i love the way the wall turned out. maybe next year i will have a place to call my own and maybe a camera of my own to pull in a stronger entry for 2007.

THANKS AGAIN EVERYONE,
Miss Rock

despite the limitations of the photo in capturing the details of the room i think that it is easy to spot the bold and creative vision in this presentation.

i love the patterned wall.
it is completely and utterly original!
