Name: Geninne
Location: Mexico
Type: 3 Bedroom home/owned
Why I use color:
Because I love the way color can make you feel. I'm a freelance illustrator/designer so color has always been a very important aspect in my life. I've lived in colorful and vibrant México for many years and I've been greatly influenced by it. I use color because it inspires me, it makes me happy. It can create the atmosphere of a room...I use color because I love life...and live is so colorful!

2 Good color tips:
1. I love bringing color to a room without overwhelming it by painting just one wall in color. That way when I'm tired of it and want change It's easier than to have to paint the entire room again.
2. The other thing I like do to bring color to a room without it being "too much" is to apply color in the bottom 3 feet of the wall and leave the rest white.
2 good color resources:
1. "Casa Mexicana" by Tim Street Porter
2. "Mexicolor: The Spirit of Mexican Design" by by Tony Cohan
Is the "collage" wall in the second photo magnetic? I know this contest is about color and is limited to two photos, but I love the glimpse into this space and wish I could see more.
I love the way the outside comes right in and sits on the wall in its majestic natural green. The green is beautiful. I like the linear look against the round bowls and potted plants and mostly, mostly, I love that everything is within reach and one could work and look at through the unobstructed window and see the surrounding world.
I'm not crazy about the opposite wall of brown with the various pieces of art posted. But that's just me, although I see it as a creative venture and an ongoing project.
It's interesting to see the duality of the person here, the illustrator/design working it out and then putting into a real design. Energizing and relaxing at the same time.
I swear the instant I saw the first picture a dozen spots of tension I didn't even know I had melted away... looks like home. Perfectly tended, perfectly balanced between lively and serene, welcoming, the colours just bright enough to register but not to overwhelm. Lovely.
Beautiful, just beautiful! The first photo is gorgeous - such an organic and soothing space - and the second photo gives me some wonderful ideas for my inspiration wall in my office. I hereby volunteer to travel to Mexico to meet with Geninne and photograph her beautiful home for AT ;)
...not a whole bunch to go on for me.
First of all, thank you guys for all your comments, it's been fun to see what you all think.
Norma: Yes, it is a magnetic wall, and you can see more photos of my home here

Angela, you're more than welcome to come visit :-)
A beautiful home filled with beautiful people! I simply love the ambiance of every room in your home it truly does welcome and relax at the same time.
what is that green color? it is beautiful.
oh yum, i know i can't see very much of this space but that first photo got me. it's beautiful.
That office is spectacular. I always like a nice neat office but reality says, you need a lot of stuff in the office.
I love the kitchen, too. You have a lot of bowls, girlfriend.
This is stunning!
OMG im in love. There are few GREAT rooms that have style, and a really good use of color in this contest. This is BEAUTIFUL. People look closely this is what style and taste are, not like these few other messy places we've seen. Thanks for sharing it with us Geninne.
THANK GOD for a decent entry! The last few have really wrecked my nerves a bit- you're kitchen is beautiful- organized- but not sterile- the colours are wonderful!
Fabuloso. I would have liked to have seen some Mexican stuff in this place, but it's beautiful and the bulletin board is fantastic.
I really love the wood used for the kitchen counters especially with the soft light coming through the windows creating interesting shadows on them.
I am really digging the clutter of the art in the second picture but if it's yours, it's yours. Regardless, I adore the top of the desk. The color and material are tremendous. You are right - as an illustrator you really do have a great eye for color.
Geninne, tu casa esta de maravilla! Felicidades a ti y a tu esposo.
The green color is amazing! My mom would love to use it in her house -- I am helping her put together a style book. Can you share the color/paint brand?
Thank you guys, reading your output has been awesome! So glad you liked the place :-)
Johnny and Madteaparty: I bough the paint from Dutch Boy, I'll get back to you on the color name/code as soon as I find the little quart can :-P
If anyone's interested in seeing more pics of the house, I just set up two sets on my flickr page:
"Mi Casa" and "From the outside"

What an incredible space, and you are also an incredible artist. Your home and artwork make me smile and think good thoughts. Extremely well done....Bravo!!!!!
I'd say we have a winner

Geninne,
Beautiful place, I come from a family of artist, and none of us are this neat. I don't know how you do it. Anyway, could you please say something about the work desk with the frosted glass top or whatever it is.. I can see that there is a frame made out of wood. Wondering where you bought it or made it...and how much it would cost to do something like that in the measurements of 92x29 1/2.
Hi Lara, thanks for commenting.
I bought that table at IKEA 4 years ago, and I think they don't carry that model anymore :( I love the table...I paint on it, cut on it and even work clay on it and it looks like new. It's actually a dinner table but I've always used it in my studio. The legs and frame are meda out of solid oak, and it has two huge drawers on each long side. With divitins for table settings I suppose...I keep mine full of supplies. My table is 62 x 35 inches.
Oh, and I inherited my neatness from my extremely neat dad ;)
Love all the warm wood tone. I am struggling to find a non costly small eating table and media stand in those types of tones. Wish I was handy!
Don't you think it is unfair posting a link to show more pictures of the house considering the restriction of the contest? If other contestants were able to post more pictures, it might also influence the way people vote for them. I have not entered this contest and am speaking as an objective by-stander. I think this entry should be disqualified.
Anne Marie, other contestnats are also posting additional pics via link. I think it's up to the AT judgest to decide if this is a violation. I'm not voting, so I just like looking at the photos.
Love the shelves for kitchen cupboards.
Question: does anyone know if this type of set up causes the dishes to get dirtier or more dust on it than in cupboards?
Hi Mela :-) I set up my MOST USED dishes like that, so I never give them time to get all dusty...and I put the glasses downward to prevent them from getting dirty. For me it's really practical to be able to just grab the dishes and serve. Hope that's helpful.
I LOVE the kitchen photo, but am no too keen on the brown wall with the pictures... I think the idea is nice, but the brown doesn't particularly work for me.
What is the name and source of the green in the kitchen? I love it!
The green in the kitchen:
Dutch Boy

Color: Swamp Fog 1G-5
And you can get it at Wal-Mart, K-Mart or Sears.
Hope that helps.
Gennine...tu casa es sencillamente hermosa.
my absolute favorite until i saw marilyn and peter (and thats just personal style). the green looks to be the perfect shade with the wood and perfectly arranged but livable. interesting choice for the second photo because i don't feel it supports your color tips. i liked the one on your blog that showed the contrast of the white wall and greenery (or maybe red patio wall?) outside too.
hi Geninne,
i've actually seen pictures of your house on decor 8/flickr/your blog so I know how utterly gorgeus it is. That first shot of the kitchen is awesome but the office shot doesn't do your place justice!! I have seen so many other pictures of your home that better represent it. Hopefully you will make it to finals and be able to submit the extra pictures--with some better photo choices, there's no reason you wouldn't win the whole contest. :)
That first photo is absolutely stunning. What a lovely kitchen. I love the use of color here - a lot of these entries have a lot of bold, wild color that doesn't really tie into anything else but that color you chose is rich and the space looks organic, pulled-together and (woo-hoo!) functional. I love that everything in that space is functional and you didn't rely on a colurful throw blanket folded and conveniently placed somewhere in the frame to "color it up." I love it.
Geninne,
Tu casa es una maravilla!
I'm so glad you mentioned "Mexicolor: The Spirit of Mexican Design." That is such a breath-taking book and a wonderful source of inspiration. Your work area looks like a really great place to get creative!
Love the warmth of the wood countertop with that earthy green. The beautiful beam of sunlight is perfectly placed :) I think this is a great example of how color use can evoke emotion. And it doesn't have to use the entire spectrum of the rainbow to be effective.
I don't know. It's a little Chairman Mao's Craft Corner to me. Maybe I'm missing something.
Geninne,
Could you tell us about the counter tops? What kind of wood and/or stain is used here? Just gorgeous with that green.
Rhiannon, you're missing the gene for good taste.
Another room I don't get as an "insta-finalist." The first picture is really nice, if not a little dull, but photographed very well. The second picture gives me a headache. It looks like the children ran out of room on the fridge for their artwork.
Either I'm missing something serious or it's nice to have 300 of your closest friends vote for you.
I would NEVER see these colors in a paint store and think, "OMG YES!" I would NEVER buy poo-green and poo-brown and put them on my walls. I wouldn't even think of it.
And that's why I would never win a contest like this. Inspired choices. I LOVE THESE ROOMS.
I just saw the other photos of your home - it is absolutely gorgeous. I love it.
First photo yes. The wall looks great and the color works well in a contemporary layout like that. The second photo, no way jose. Not really an interesting color palette at all. Nice to hang the kids stuff but does that really show a great range of colors that are interesting together? That wall could really be something but falls short. And I have to agree with the previous comment regarding the voting tally numbers, grossly exaggerated but understandable under the voting circumstances.
This is a succulent use of green and wood. Splendor in the grass!
you kitchen is beautiful. the honey colored counters against that green is spot on. beautiful!
I love your colors in the room. The cactuses, the wall, the dishes, the warm wood. And, I saw your blog- WOW, what a talent! Will you adopt me? :)
