Name: Annesa
Location: San Diego, CA
Type: 2 Bedroom rented
Why I use color: I use color as an inexpensive way of expressing my personality. I consider myself a very creative person and find color a fun and endless way of showing it. Color enables me to create personality in any space by acknowledging the use of the space. Each space that I inhabit seems to come to life once I put that first coat of paint on the wall or add that perfect accessory.

2 Good color tips:
1. When choosing color, remember to select something that you love. You can always sample the color before it is permanent. Take your time until you are completely happy with your selection.
2. Be creative! Choose where you want the color to come from; whether it is paint, accessories, artwork, or furniture, and then go for it.
2 Good color resources:
1. When selecting an idea for a punch of color I often find myself flipping through the latest home design magazine. I see something I am drawn to; then I transform it into something that I love.
2. I find fabric stores extremely helpful when looking for color ideas. The color and patterns of fabric give great ideas for adding color to any space.
This stripe is something I'd like to incoroporate into my own home. I'm sure after taking this bold step, Annessa could do more throughout her place!
There are a lot of "no" votes but no comments as to why.
I love the stripes and the colors. I also like the way the white lamps stand out against the stripes.
I think it doesn't make the impact it could because the sofa blends in with the wall color too much. If a different sofa is out of the question, perhapes changing the wall color behind it would be an option?
Also, the pictures behind it would make more of an impact if they were bigger or at least hung higher.
I picked In-Contention. I love the wall and the colors, but the sofa blends into the wall and the pictures look a little misplaced.
I like the color choice, but the picture placement irks me a bit. And the brown on the wall and the brown couch just don't do anything for me. But from here, those are some impressive-ly straight edges!
personally i am not a fan of this room because the dark paint and matching couch seem to make the room feel "heavy" like everything is being dragged down into the floor, which seems especially odd since it appears that there is a high ceiling with lots of light in that area.
well executed paint job though! i do like the idea of the stripe.
pb, the reason I voted no is that the combination of the low part of the ceiling, the horizontal stripes, and the brown couch makes the room feel very heavy to me. Perhaps a lighter couch would enliven things.
I do really like the idea of the stripe. Here is the one thing that bothers me about the color combo: there is no question this is a great combo, buuuuttt....the robin's egg and chocolate has been the 'IT' color combo for a few years, so much so that I think it's way cliche now. Jonathan Adler did it, Restoration adopted it as their signature, and the list goes on and on. I know inspiration should come from places like these, I just feel like this combo has been everywhere. I have thought, and many of my friends have said at one point in the past 3 years, how they are loving this combo. It is pretty, Annessa, don't get me wrong, but it's not necessarily in contention for a new or inspired combination.
I am a big fan of contrasting dark colors with brights; I really like the way the stipe adds soem whimsey to the heaviness of the chocalate. However, i too am not a fan of the sofa. The perfectness of the stripe and the weathered-ness of the couch seem to be a paradox. But, this is a contest on color, not decor; so, ggod for you!
I like the strips.
Maybe if you introduce a third colour substituting the low part for a pale green. I would change the art too.

the stripe is a great idea. You may want rethink your color placement. Since the couch is brown, maybe the turquoise should be used in place of the chocolate.
I think the wall stripe is okay and I think there is great furniture (perhaps in white, silver, or even a lighter blue) that would work well, but the furniture in the room is all way too dark. The couch gets lost against the chocolate walls.
Maybe you can try to find a white couch? Like the Petrie from Crate and Barrel?
i'm a sucker for brown/taupe and any shade of robin's egg blue.
i really like this graphic imaginative use of color. it's exactly what this contest is about.
the sofa makes me want to kill myself.
the photos and the lamps don't go with each other, the sofa or the graphic.
which is why i voted for in contention, 'cause this is one of the few entries that really is about good color, well used, to good effect.
color wheel
Huh. Yesterday we had the apple-green kitchen which managed to make a basement feel anything but; and today a room which might be on the twentieth floor, and which has vaulted ceilings to boot, but which feels like a basement.
That said, I voted In contention, just for the confidence displayed in those horizontal stripes. I'd really like to see the room in context, though.
I love the wall, but I don't like the non-matching brown sofa in front of the brown stripe. Maybe a white slipcover would make it stand out more. Or maybe the sofa could be placed perpendicular to that wall, depending on floor plans. Some kind of contrast has to occur in order for it to look interesting.
Love it! But like I commented on Antonio from Texas' entry I'm still only voting "In contention" because the second photo doesn't give any new information and I feel like I'm voting on a single "couch and art" composition. I want to see living space!
Love the colors together. What are they?
I'm afraid I have to say no to this one.
The dark brown couch disappears against the chocolate brown wall. The effect is heavy and cave-like, even though the room has a high ceiling and plenty of daylight. It could look fabulous with a light-colored couch, however--preferably one with sleek lines that harmonize with the wall graphic, but upholstered in a textured fabric to add softness and warmth. An off-white, maybe with subtle brown flecks, would be good. Even a slipcover in a light color would help, if buying a new sofa isn't possible.
It also needs accent pillows that bring the turquoise down from the wall stripe, tying the room together. They don't all have to be exact matches to the stripe on the wall, either--powder blue velvet, iridescent blue-green silk, and even something in a complementary color, like a warm pink or salmon, would look fabulous. Also consider bold, graphic patterns in those colors, plus the chocolate and white.
I can't tell what's on the floor, but it looks like anonymous beige-greige landlord-special carpet. A shag or flokati rug in natural white, placed on top of the carpet, would look great. So would an area rug with a graphic pattern in colors that complement the wall. A chrome-and-glass or Lucite coffee table would also help lighten things up and add some sparkle, as well as harmonize with the retro-'70s vibe of the wall graphic.
The artwork over the sofa bothers me to no end. I really hate it, in fact. The pictures themselves aren't the problem; it's that even together they are too small for that space over the sofa and the frames are too dark to work against the chocolate wall. They look like you didn't have any other art to use in that space. I think a big mirror, framed in blond wood, brushed aluminum, or brushed silver leaf, would look great there.
So now that I've trashed your pad, what do I like? I like the graphic stripe; you did a good job on it. I like the way those big rice-paper lanterns look against it. I like the colors, and unlike an earlier poster I don't have a problem with the brown-and-turquoise scheme. Most of all, I like that you're not afraid of color, and have the guts to use it in a bold way.
I vote no....the space looks like it could be interesting, but the horizontal line fights with the diagonal of the ceiling.
This color combination is SO SO five minutes ago...So trendy it' already dated.
I hate to pile on with the consensus, I feel very strange saying that I love the stripes (which I do) since I can't love the overall look, so I said In Contention.
It's not just that the couch is not an exact match to that brown, I'd like it to contrast, and yet I'd like there to be something more graphically monochromatic about it in the context of those stripes.
That couch needs a room with a totally different vibe.
I can't believe someone said this person should buy a new, boring, already much-cliched WHITE petrie couch from CRATE AND BARREL to replace this lovely, comfy, expensive-looking leather sofa!
Come on...I thought this was supposed to be about practical, original design! We shouldn't be encouraging throwing out perfectly good furniture for trendy consumerism!
I love the stripe and the color combination, albeit everywhere today. It's the execution of the rest of the decor that leaves me cold.
I like the stripes (idea) but this room looks like it has very high ceilings and the stripes in this case makes the room look squatty.
OMG, I blame Trading Spaces for the proliferation of painted stripes. People, please stop painting stripes in your house, then patting yourself on the back for being so clever. Have you taken a look at the other entries? Out of the countless striped rooms maybe 1 or 2 have worked.
Let's learn from these mistakes, just say no to stripes.
