apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

#1 - Bondgirl07's Neapolitan Dollhouse

Name: bondgirl07
Location: Lewisville, Texas (North Dallas)
Type: Duplex

Why I use color: I am a graphic designer/art director by trade. I see everything as a graphic statement. As such, color is one of the best ways to add impact, to have a voice, to invoke emotion, to take a bad day and make it happy again. Color separates the brave from the not-so-brave.

2 Good color tips: I have no idea how to give someone color tips, but the best advice I can give is to close your eyes and imagine your color, then be brave enough to pick it.

Favorite type and brand of paint: My favorite type of paint varies depending on what sort of effect I am trying to achieve. I live near a Sherwin Williams, and they take pretty good care of me.

The name alone deserves an award. That top photo is arresting! Way to embrace pink, sister.

Love the combination of pink and red. Very romantic. Also, I am in love with the floor seating dining room. I may steal that idea.

Your style is much more over the top than I usually like, but somehow this all works. It is extremely inviting and alluring and cozy at the same time. I hope you win so that you can buy a new rug for the living area. This rug seems a little incongruent. I think I'd like to see something softer and more in line with your beautiful color scheme. Maybe violet or fushia? Rugs can be so difficult.

Great job. Thanks for sharing.

Fun! Too bad the photos are a little grainy...

While I appreciate your boldness and "bravery", there is still a lot to be said about using color in a subtle, sophisticated way that truly highlights each color choice as an important part of a whole composition (which, as a graphic designer, you must know a lot about). Very exuberant, but all the colors and forms are screaming at me and, thus, no color truly stands out which kind of defeats the purpose of using color in the first place.

I very much love the diamond pattern in your bedroom, though!

I think you did a lot of neat things with color, but for me, they don't seem to gel. For instance, I love the wall graphic, and I like the striped walls, but I'm not crazy about the two together. I like the rug with the couch, and the couch with the walls, but I don't like the rug with those walls.

But I admit I'm in the not-so-brave category. Kudos to you for going for broke!

For me personally, a fantastic place to visit and escape it all, but I would not want to live there. What a great getaway, though.

I don't care for it generally but...the sudden blue in pic #4 doesn't make sense.

pretty wild but sexy. i disagree with those who think the colors don't make sense - i find the dusty reds, pinks, blues and greens to be an interesting combination. i also disagree that one color should "stand out," or the purpose (whose?) is defeated. you've made a muted vibrancy of a world in your place.

Hmmmmm---one of the reasons I really like this is because of the lovely influence of the teal-ish colors that tie the pinks together with the rug. But a lot of the teal I see looks to be the lighting, and/or the shadows, and I fear it might not really be there and that everything would glare pink and red. Which, by the way, I love if it's truly moderated by that greeny-bluish cast. . . .

I'm with Aulaire on the merits of the blue-green rug.

Omit any angle that's inherently uncurated (the landing strip wall), stage the space more professionally (no little bits of stuff on the floor, organize the magazines, get the cat to look at the camera), and light the photos properly -- and the space would be getting raves for its tongue-in-cheek Hollywood glamor.

Its fab!

I'm stealing about 8 different decorating idea!! Ribbons of Diamonds on the wall....Stacked cushions on the floor....

Where is the rug from? I love the wave pattern?

The photos look like they were taken using a camera phone or lower end digital camera, with all the noise evident. It's a shame such an interesting interior suffers from a case of poor photos being submitted.

I love it that you clearly have created a haven for yourself on a real-life (i.e. limited) budget. I agree with the others that better photos would have ended up with a better result in the contest.

Excellent, excellent! Personality at last. Love the colors though I wish the fotos were clearer. What really helps is that your furniture/accessories are unique, unlike the many entries that are westelmed to death.

O....M....G.... Its like boudouir chic, and marrakesh had an illegitimate love child! Just WAAAAAAAAY too much stuff - and its ALL competing to be the focal points- you need to let some stuff fade to the back. Mirrors, stripes, and wall graphic on the same wall? Pick one. Or paint the wall graphic on the darkest color of the stripes to provide cohesion.

And to answer the above question about the rug - I believe its CB2.

i do appreciate the quirkiness and the personality. but for me, it's just too much. and i say that as a devoted lover of pink and fun DIY painting. i'd like to hang out here - but only for a little while. after that i think my eyes would get fatigued.

I just can't get into any aspect of this-- aesthetically speaking. As for the bold spirit-- press on, girl. Press on.

It doesn't look like any forethought was put into this room. It's carelessly decorated and the use of color seems incredibly sloppy.
