apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

#11- DMstudio's Private Sanctuary

Name: Dmstudio
Location: Denver, Colorado
Type: 3 bedroom Flat, Owned

Why I use color:

As an artist I’ve always been aware of the power color can have on your senses. Color can lift your sense of sight the way the aroma of baking bread or pumpkin pie can enliven your sense of smell. Color transforms my home into my private sanctuary.

My style is very eclectic, however, in my home color provides a sense of warmth, comfort and relaxation in some spaces while enriching others with vibrant energy.

2 Good color tips:

1) I try to balance color within a room. The color of a wall may be picked up elsewhere in the room such as a rug, piece of furniture or artwork. These are also great inspiration for color. 2) Don’t scale back your color choices because you are timid about using a particular color. If you love the color, go for it. Walls can always be repainted or accessories returned.

Favorite type and brand of paint:

Kwal Paints or ICI/Dulux, it is hard to limit yourself to one manufacturer when looking for that perfect color!

Nice colors in the first photo... I've always wanted a Pachinko machine.

Love the little details but I'm not sure about that cat on your bed...

what the heck's wrong with a cat on a bed??

in general, its a little cluttery/crazy for my personal tastes, but i love how the hallway feels and i LOVE the quilt on your bed-- where'd you get that?

nice entry :)

While not my style, there's something about this entry... I really like it. The colors are well done.

Agreed. That quilt on your bed is lovely! I'd love to know where it's from.

I was a little wary of the first picture....then WOW...I love this place! I love the use of intricate (but not sloppy) little bits of color interwoven together. The hallway rug is the perfect choice to go with the artwork on the walls. The livingroom rug is busy - but the solidity/airy-ness of the chairs balances it out. My only critique would be to replace the big ottomans with something more benchlike - a Nelson bench perhaps...their poofiness almost overwhelms the Bertoia chairs.

I like how the artwork and the pachinko machines give the space little pops of color.

The quilt looks like a Hawaiian quilt.

The colors on those things on the wall are so much fun to look at!

Is this your first use of an Occasional Cat? He looks somewhat surprised to be enlisted for the photo shoot.

I love the first picture, the quilt, and the Occasional Cat...the rest is just ok for me, though I think you have a knack for choosing rugs.

Modfan pretty much said everything I would have said, except that your cat goes beautifully with the darker, velvet-looking pillows.

moepong, it looks like a Hawaiian quilt. I'm pretty sure it is. The Hawaiian's quilt in this beautiful two-toned style.

Thank you for all the comments. The quilt is Hawaiian. I have one other purchased in Hawaii, but it so happens this one was purchased online at Rainbow Hawaii.

It is interesting that the first photo either intrigues people or has the opposite effect. it is my studio where I wanted a creative fun atmosphere. I've been collecting pachinko machines for a few years. They all function, light up, etc. but also serve as unique art pieces as well.

Clickchick, I'm in Capitol Hill, not far from Mayfair near Cheeseman Park. A great building built in 1927.

Modfan, I can appreciate your comment on the ottomans. I replaced my sofa with the 2 chairs to take advantage of the great fireplace and entertainment center on the opposite wall. All the other walls are either doors or windows which makes arranging furniture a challenge. I still wanted to put my feet up once in awhile. Usually there is a wooden tray on the ottomans that I think makes them look less "poofy" but it seemed to distract when I was taking the photos. I have a cherry and steel table under the window that can be switched with the ottomans also. This works great to entertain more people than just the 4 chairs would accommodate by utilizing the ottomans as a window bench.

Moepong, Pottery Barn is giving deep discounts on their version of the Hawaiian quilt right now: http://www.potterybarn.com/products/p6762/index.cfm?pkey=xsrd0m1%7C20%7C%7C%7C1%7C%7C%7C%7C%7C%7C%7Chawaiian%20quilt&cm%5Fsrc=SCH

Sorry about all of the cat postings I do here--I find cats evil. I would rather have a turtle or ET on my bed. Katydids are cool too since they're lime green.

meltendo, the cat is added color and matches the pillows. A lime green katydid would mean I would have to repaint the room. :)

Dig the toys, LOVE the cat, enjoy the artwork, love the place (all that room, I'd kill for it!). You did a great job creating a unique place that says a bit more than just "I sleep here"...If you need to get any of that cool stuff off your hands, uh, I could take 'em for you
(including the cat)
;)
