apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

#12-Nicole's Subtle Vintage

Name: Nicole
Location: Echo Park
Type: 1 Bedroom

Why I use color:

While I shy away from bold color when it can result in sensory
overload, I definitely geek out over amazing hues and color
combinations applied properly. Working with a rented apartment in an
old structure such as mine is tough as there is no ability to swap out
dreary tile, old appliances, or fix less than perfect surfaces.
Therefore I relied on color in my kitchen to use the existing vibe to
my advantage and make otherwise dull items pop. Fashion and art are a
source of continuous inspiration, from the Fall07 Prada ads to Los
Angeles graffiti. Most of my accent pieces are treasures from thrift
stores since I'm young, furniture-less and broke - this is actually
the first kitchen of my own! Overall, I just like to giggle a bit when
I walk into a room.

2 Good color tips:
1 - Don't force vibrant color on the walls just for the sake of
playing with color.
2 - Shell out the extra money if necessary for the perfect hue - if
you can sense the difference on a swatch it will definitely impact the
mood of the room once it's on the walls.

Favorite type and brand of paint:
Lovvvving Ralph Lauren Vintage Masters

I like your colour combos.

sometimes it seems like the entries are more about framing vignettes to get a good picture, rather than showing any real use of color.

color is obviously going to be in the photo -- everything is a color. the stove ... the owl... the shelves. i think the contest needs to exemplify more deliberate color choices, rather than coincidences that are captured in the way you frame your shots.

that said, your house looks clean.

Hmmm... it seems like you have a yellow wall and black (is that black? I feel like there's a hint of green in it) wall and some colorful kitchen pieces on display. But that's about all I see.
I do really like that "old school" school desk, though. And the chalkboard graffiti-esque piece above it.

What color is that yellow? I'd love to do something similar in my kitchen to replace the mustard-yellow-pretty-much-brown paint job.

Love the yellow/gold with the vintage orange pottery. Would love to see more of it, but I'm a "more" kind of girl. The chalk board is great. Is it blank and you "scribbled" graffiti-esque in chalk, or did you paint that on it? Like it either way.

The subtle depth of color in your place is much more interesting than most of the overly-designed-within-reach-color-consulted-lofty-aspiring-suburban-dwelling entries in this contest. Good work.

Colourful, but still restful, I like it.

That chair with cup all by itself in the kitchen feels lonely... Would have liked to see bigger frames of your pics, cause I think you have great taste!

For those who asked - the yellow is Ralph Lauren Vintage Masters - Mango Gold, RL Number: VM34
The other color is in fact dark green.

The chalkboard was done by LA writer Eye One - http://www.eyelost.com

It's a small square kitchen so there really isn't any "more."
thanks for the comments all!

the first photo excited me because it's so charming and cute... but then the follow-up disappointed me a little. would've loved to see more of your place!

This feels calm and thoughtful.

Remember how a lot of people used green last year? This year I think it's yellow.

That maize and superdarkgreen combo in the kitchen is both fresh and mature. And I love the orange acorn against the lavender backdrop! Very original juxtapositions of color; I'm totally inspired.
