apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

#17 - Annie and Michael's Study in Symmetry

Name: Annie & Michael
Location: Culver City, CA
Type: One bedroom apartment

Why I use color:

Color like scale, value, and texture is another dimension of design. It can emphasize, define and compliment the space its in as well as objects surrounding it. Using color is a way to make a room more interesting or fail miserably.....

2 Good color tips:

1. Using a low gloss paint on the walls of a small room will reflect light and create more depth.

2. Don't be afraid to paint over it!

Favorite Paint

High gloss lacquer for furniture and Dunn Edwards for walls

Me Likey! The colors create a warmth and inviting nature to the space. It can be very easy to follow the pack ie. dwellers ect. This space is a great mix of traditional and modern and it doesn't feel like a stupid copy.

Very nice! I like how the TV doesn't dominate the space. I didn't even notice it, until the second time I looked at the photo.

This is truly fabulous! Can you tell us the square footage of your beautiful space? I like how you used 2 lucite (?) coffee tables to solve the problem of too much distance between the two couches at the same time as keeping the space look open. I love the color combinations, the 3 huge mirrors behind the couch. And... and... I love everything, couches, dining chairs and magazine holder.

Totally agree with Monica's comment about the sofas. I love them. I feel envy coming on again... :)

I love this living room - the couches are gorgeous and I love the rug. The pink elephant is a really humorous, warm touch. Gorgeous!

Glad you guys are digging our 900 sq ft space. The magazine rack is vintage and most likely came from a library. The CB2 coffee tables are acrylic and allow us to really enjoy the Paul Smith rug beneath. The two sofas do rock for laying around - especially if you push them together in the center of the room and make a giant 'love boat'!!

Hope this answers everyones questions..

I would love to know where you got your couches, and what is the paint color for that pretty blue gray wall?

Our Edward sofas are from Empiric:

I will have to look up the Dunn Edwards paint color used on the wall.

Thanks for all the positive comments!

and p.s. whitespike - nude snorkeling is for the really extreme water sports fanatic. I have a healthy respect for sea urchins so I opt for a suit, albeit one light pink in color.

I LOVE your apartment! Simply beautiful! Thank you so much for posting this. It actually gave me some good ideas for my own place which I am struggling with right now. Kudos for the TV setup too! Great idea!

Wow, with the sofas set wide apart, the 60s institutional magazine rack, the recessed lighting, large corporate mirrors and the generic lucite tables, this looks like the waiting room of an infectious diseases specialist. The doctor will see you now!

Where is the color? And is that really another little waiting area by the front door? I'm guessing the receptionist's desk is just around the corner.
