Name: Mar and Bry
Location: West Los Angeles, CA
Type: 2 bedroom rental apartment
Why I use color:
My husband and I are both grad students and live in UCLA family housing. Nearly all of our furniture and accoutrements are from craigslist, ikea, or flea markets. Because of our restricted budget, color was the main way we carved out the kind of living space we wanted.
We love to host and somehow manage to cram nearly 20 people in our place every weekend. It was important for us to have a living room that was stimulating yet coherent; I did not want it to look like it came out of a catalog…or a multi-family garage sale.
I try to synchronize the emotional tones of each room with their respective colors. Since I love to cook, I wanted food to be the focal point in our dining room, rather than a blaring wall color or art piece. Our most daring use of color was the turquoise in our study, which hopefully energizes my husband to think about math all day. And it's a great complement to all of his yellow math textbooks. Who knew advanced math books were all yellow?
2 Good color tips:
Before purchasing something, think about how its color will interact with the other objects in proximity to it. The perfect-shade-of-red vase may look much better in a store than on your black side table adjacent to your green sofa with yellow pillow. Unless you like the rastafari, look.
There are a bajillion shades of blue. And green. And orange. And… It's amazing how a tiny tinge of a tonal change could make or break a color. I was actually pretty disappointed with our living room wall color even though it looked fine on the color swatch. Be careful.
Favorite type and brand of paint:
We started with the cheapest brand at Home Depot and went from there.
Ooh, I love your couch and I ADORE the teal and yellow in the study.
And Jesus is your bookshelf organized and pretty...good for you!
I'm not getting a particularly strong color story from these pictures, but the rooms are still obviously pleasant, thought-out, and have tons of color. Quite an achievement for grad students!

The last two pics are my favorite. Your Expedit is a thing of beauty with the way you have it organized. I'm jealous, mine is a cluttered mess.

I love the first picture! If it was me, I'd be energetic all day long in that room. And your bookshelf is quite nice as well :)

I love this! I painted my last apartment's walls a very similar pale blue color and it was fantastic. I loved how the hue would change in different natural lights, and so many other colors were complemented.

I think this is fantastic, and as a graduate student myself I know you have probably done it on a budget.
May I ask what the turquoise paint is, and if it's really as dark as it looks on the monitor? I'm looking for a sort of mid-to-dark teal and this looks close. Thanks!

Hard to read the Springer titles...is that algebraic geometry?

thanks everyone!
ag- yes, i think so...that's my husband's research area.

It's obvious to me that you guys have good color sense, but it looks as if you are still at the beginning of your experimentation with color. That living room color that you say you aren't really happy with could probably have been a lot darker and would have had a better effect. Perhaps like one of those blue books in that great bookshelf.
I do however, love that teal in your bedroom. What color is it?

I love your bookshelf! I thought about organizing the books in my expedit by color since they're all biology books anyway and don't really need to be separated by topic, but since they're all bio books they are almost all green and blue!
Also, where did you get that awesome plush toast guy?

"plush toast guy" looks suspiciuously like domo-kun (japanese tv mascot, nhk tv i think). cute little guy.
i really like the blue in the first picture and like everybody else, i have to say you sure have a way with organization and display!

I am amazed that this is the home of grad students. It is evident you have a great eye. Love the yellow vases. Love the teal with the mathbooks. Love the books arranged by color.
Great job. Hope you win a prize.

Yay - grad students! I love the yellow math books against the blue wall too. I'm glad you guys entered the contest.

Gorgeous. The title is a little weird though, was that your idea or the AT guys? Glad to see grad students having more success with decor than myself.

Where, oh where did you get the dining room rug? I love it!

thanks for the kind words everyone!
betsbillabong- i think the paint color is called blue lagoon; sorry i don't remember the paint brand...i just know it's not expensive. ;)
rosy- i was actually hoping for a more seafoam color in the living room, not necessarily darker. the color i used looked green, actually had the word green in the color title, but turned out gray-blue. oh well! i like it now.
cat- i bought mr. toast at one of the giant robot stores here in LA. i think the brand is funfun.
anne- ugh, the title was my idea and i totally regret it. i wasn't sure whether i had to include a title so i wrote it at the last minute without thinking. bry was like- what the hell is color arousing? i dunno either, yo.
demita- the rug is from urban outfitters. :)

I'm such a sucker for yellow accents. Your treatment of the Expedit and its contents is fantastic, confident.

love the picture with the old chair, great to see a piece like that incorporated so well.

Not a lot of color on the walls - but you do a really good job of incorporating color into your accents. The bowl on the table is a almost gemlike! But again, seriously, who organizes books by color?
view Modfan's profile
modfan- hee hee...i know, it IS kind of crazy to organize books by color. it started out as an experiment but i decided to keep it because, strangely enough, it's actually easier for me to remember the books by their color. and now it's kind of become the "focal centerpiece" of our room.

Hi Greengelato,
Love the rooms. Can you tell me where you bought your couch--I love it. Is it comfortable?
BTW: I'm going to use your bookcase for inspiration when I move. (:

I swear I am not stalking your entry. I just keep coming back to look at it because I love what you've done! You chose the perfect shade of blue, the yellow pops against it gorgeously, and everything looks so hip and yet homey. You can tell that real people live here... and they are fun! I love it.
