apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

#7 Karyn and Eric's Domestic Bliss

Name: Karyn
Location: Beverly Hills
Type: One Bedroom

Why I use color:Color keeps me interested and awake. Color keeps me constantly re-inventing my design. I am so inspired by other countries' palettes and of course, by interior design magazines. I will see a new color combo and immediately want to go home and rearrange everything. With a yellow living room, a teal dining room, an apple green kitchen, and a chocolate bedroom - I think you can easily see that color is my passion!

2 Good color tips:
If a paint color scares you, just try it. Nothing risked, nothing gained! And a re-paint is so easy.
Cool with cool and warm with warm are fail safe. Blue with green, orange with pink and red = yum!

Favorite type and brand of paint:
Ralph Lauren

Is the white chair in the first photo comfortable? Would you curl up and read a book in it?

Nice! But I would arrange the cat, mirror and lamp to be a bit more balanced. Maybe lose the cat?

I like what I see, but would prefer more wide shots of individual rooms. Great barstools!

Very beautiful. I love the prints (fabric canvases?) in the living room. I love your color choices. I love the white chair too.

I like the view from the brown bedroom to the blue hall to the green living room. I wish this was a contest rule: show the view of two or three walls of the home-it's the best indicator of how someone uses color expertly.

Are they joking about a cat? Don't they know you don't arrange cats? It's looks like we have the same kitchen color. Love it.

Wish I could see a better shot of the green kitchen or the room with the blue wall that we only catch a glimpse of at the end.

I like it.
Who in their right mind would ask if you can curl up that white chair though? It's clearly an occasional chair. I would think that that's why you have the chaise and the big comfty-looking chair and ottoman.

It's obvious that this is an "occasional cat" much the same as an occasional chair--with the added advantage that the cat will place itself where needed. As we all know, too much symmetry is boring, so in this photo the cat has added itself to insert an unexpected nonsymmetry, making the scene fresh and intriguing once again. Cats are also well known for getting into areas where it should be impossible to gain entry; therefore, the cat will be able to insert itself where required, even if one forgets to leave a door or window open.

I would like to see MORE occasional cats used in the photos on AT. This is an exciting trend!

Does anyone know where barstools like these can be found? They're exactly what I've been looking for. I can't really spend any more time at work hunting for them.....

"neko" is the japanese word for cat, which just makes kuroneko's comment so much more delightful!

To "ongoingprojects," those stools are from DWR. They are the "Bienal Counter Stool."

I would really really really like to know where that armchair is from!

I think the big cushy armchair is the Parcel chair from DWR. The white chair is the Kite Chair...also from DWR.

I love the siteline from the brown bedroom into the blue livingroom. Thats what I envision when I think about how color works within a space - not just broad shots of single color walls.

This place has an overall sunny feel to it that is nice, even tho it isnt the most curated space we've seen yet. Still good!

I would love to know the paint color in the living room. I've been looking for something that will brighten ours, as we get little natural light.

jp - The white chair is suprisingly comfortable because it's so oversized, but no, it's not a cozy curl up and read a book chair. We have other squishy furniture for that. It's originally meant to be an outdoor chair, but when we moved we lost our yard and I'm still a long ways from owning all the furniture I need, so it's in the living room for now!

fastkat - The artwork shown is 2 of 3 that I own by Campbell Laird. My boss amazingly gave me 3 that were on my wish list last Christmas. I am a lucky employee!

gordon - I didn't know that "neko" is the Japanese word for cat, which makes it all the stranger that you mentioned it, and that my cat's name is indeed, Nika. Trippy! She pretty much sits wherever she wants so it was hard for me to find pictures where she WASN'T.

yakimushi - The armchair is one that we got as a floor sample 5 years ago at DWR.

As far as the paint color requests, I'm sorry, I'm currently working in NYC and have been away from my home for 3 months now. My paint swatches are buried in a drawer somewhere and I can't get to them for another month! The pictures actually make me miss my home a LOT!

Thanks for all of the kind words. It's pretty scary to put pics in this contest not knowing what people will say! Would love to put more pics of my blue dining room in next time around. xo

I think the use of colors are fantastic. The rooms seem to have a nice flow to them.
