Fall Colors SouthWest Finalist #2: Planetsusanna's Golden Cottage

Here the second of our 4 southwestern finalists, from Silver Lake, California. Please toss in your two cents, as our panel of judges will use your comments to help finalize their own decision (it's a tough job!).

Name: Planetsusanna
Location: Silver Lake, California
Type: One bedroom cottage
Go to: Planetsusanna's Original Entry

11-12-anniemichael.jpgPlanetsusanna's favorite OTHER entry:

Other than our own entry, we liked #17 - Annie and Michael's Study in Symmetry . It's very edgy and and colorful without being cartoon-ish.

In you home, tell us about and show us your favorite colorful object?:

There is painting that I found a few years back of a "Traveling Maiden/Dancing Girl" (the painting is either Indian, or Persian, I'm not quite sure, it has decorative elements of both cultures) from a store called Further in Silver Lake.

I love the colors, it is painted on silk, the subtle gradations from orange to yellow to green are very soothing and rich. The wild frame in tones of golds and ebony is a strong contrast to the flora and fauna color pallet of the image, what a winning contrast. If you look at this image and then at the finished living room you can see the direct lineage of inspiration to execution of this rooms colors....

I love the warmth of the colors with the excitement of the animal prints. The flow of the rooms makes you want to go on and on to discover other treasures or stay put and relish. Takes you back to the days when Hearst Castle was hopping with the elite and naughty. Definitely a refuge or hideaway from the outside world. Good Eye!!!

This house is a very well thought out work of art. The whole place has a fun worldly flair and each piece is incredibly original in every room in it's, class, imagination, placement and design. Feels just like home.

Beautiful home....and it does feel like home. Great texture and play of balance. Nice asian accents with some african thrown in for balance.

No only criticism is that color wise it seems a bit one tone....like living in a honeycomb. All that gold would surely burn my retinas.

Let's see . . . take a bit of Hollywood Regency, mix in some Mid-Century Modern, throw in an item from all the countries you've visited . . . and it works!! Beautifully! (Raise the curtain rod and I'm buying the whole look!)

Beautiful! And I agree about the extra photos. I hate it when AT is stingy with the pics! I like to see it ALL.

The flow and rhythm of the space is maintained perfectly through the use of such warm colors, as you move from room to room, which opens up the rather small spaces of the bungalow and makes them feel large and lush. The choice of antiques and new objects intermingle perfectly. A very difficult task to pull of in any space and/or project.

This entry is nothing short of amazing, especially with such a small budget and an even smaller space. To pull off something so opulent takes a very skilled designer.

This entry wins-hands down! As a production designer in the film business- there are always the same objectives to consider although the application may be different-design, layout, color and light. This cottage has wonderful design with it's ecclectic feel from regency to mid century. The layout is correct considering the size of the house. It feels roomy and inviting. The colors are warm and work great with the furnishings. And the use of light is perfect. I would especially like to see what the cottage looks like in the evening. I'm sure it's just as wonderful as in the day. Winner, winner, winner.
