Name: Enrique
Location: Los Angeles
Why I use color:
"Orange is a tough color. But it worked with the plexiglass/oak Shoji-style sliders. In terms of furniture, an oak look seemed the way to go despite my ambivalence to it. The opposite wall was white and needed texture. Since the room was taking on a 70s throwback vibe (orange wall, warm golden woods), I thought the photo collage wallpaper of an autumnal forest would work well (wry wink to Brady's-era living). A dark neutral palette for accessories was key to balancing the bold walls and bland oak. The oversized driftwood candle and framed artwork are statement pieces that add texture."
Color Tips:
1. Balance. Balance a bold color by layering a neutral palette around it. Balance darker tones with lighter tones.
2. Use pattern and texture as a counterpoint, not a focal point. Create visual interest without overwhelming the eye.
3. Put all the lighting on dimmers. Good lighting is key for adjusting the character and depth of color.
Color Resources:
"Rather than suggest specific resources, Id like to address color inspiration."
1. Feed your eyes. Color inspiration is all around, not just in shelter magazines or design TV. Go outside and drink in the colors surrounding you. If something resonates, take a picture--either with a camera or in your mind's eye.
2. Live in color. Live outside your self-restricted box and break routine. See new places, eat new foods, see art, meet new people. Each new experience brings with it a new visual feast for your eyes--with colors and textures you might not have seen before.

nice work, and great suggestions. what i like about the use of the wallpaper is the way it extends the room (the grid on the adjacent wall does this as well). using color and pattern this way can help camouflage a small space, and it creates a more exciting "walk through" experience. great furniture choices here as well: perfect height.
If a room can be opulent and Zen at the same time, Enrique has done it. I am now, officially, his groupie.
Love the room, love the both "color inspiration" items, both quite inspiring.
Beautiful Enrique. Between your patio, bathroom, kitchen and now bedroom I think I've seen your whole apartment.
What is that at the end of your bed? Looks like something Moses rode in when pushed into the water.
Terrific. Shows that color doesn't have to be an assualt. Where did you get that bed?
Wow. I like it. You even got the old school woodland scene wallpaper to work. What is that great piece at the end of the bed.
enrique--do you remember the name of that orange?
i love how the color and wallpaper makes what could be a standard issue modern room pop with personality.
I've been so intrigued and yet scared of the occasional (always ironic) reincarnations of forest photo-murals. I love how it works in this context. I think I recognize the bed and night tables from Ikea (I almost bought them but, share your ambivalence toward the oak finish) in this room it's perfect though, brilliant use of Ikea. This is a really good example of the sum being greater than the parts. Although...some of the parts are pretty great. I also love the way the big floor lamps by the bed are echoed by the smaller lamps on the dresser.
I really like this room a lot- it seems very balanced. i'd love to see the whole place, but i jsut did a search and didn't find his other rooms. where should i look? thanks!!!
Thanks, folks, for the nice comments! Good to see that my efforts are appreciated since I don't think this room is really to everyone's taste. But it does work for me and my bi-polar fascination with stylistic dichotomies--trash/class, high/low, precious/disposable, modern/primitive, light/dark, hip/tacky, etc. If there are any detractors, I'd love to hear from them, too. When I've posted pics in the past, I've valued all the criticism (good and bad), appreciated the different perspectives, and often changed things in the rooms based on the comments. So, I definitely welcome any "armchair decorating" criticism you might have...
rr. The boat-like thing at the foot of the bed is 63" piece of driftwood that has been hollowed out, filled with wax and turned into a candle. And you're right, it does look like something from biblical times. I'd like to claim DIY credit for it, but I actually bought it at an Asian import store in West L.A. called Upstairs/Downstairs.
Nnenna/sg. Good call! Yes, the bed and attached nightstands are from IKEA (as are the floor lamps, the white globular bedside lamp, the 3 dressers). I'm a firm believer in economizing when you have nice-looking options.
simone. I don't have the paint chip but I believe the color is "Blaze Orange" by Behr.
FAN-TAB-U-LOUS!
LOVE IT.
Lovely and sophisticated! The orange is a great sunny shade, doesn't look in these pics like it is heavily on the red side. Can I housesit someday? :D
Seriously, a round of applause for Enrique!
Enrique is the master of design and decoration. This room makes you feel at peace with yourself!
What a great mix of ideas, and finding a way to use forrest wallpaper (without needing a pool table and wood paneled game room, of course) is totally genius. This room is innovative and super cool!
Beautiful. I've always had a weakness for orange tones. You really have a knack for space and color.
There seems to be an orange theme running thru many of these entries so far. It's a color I associate with the mid 60's decor and am no longer drawn to as a rule. Here however it seems so soothing and relaxing in the environment you've created. Kudos.
Reverting to the "looks like a hotel" comment on another thread -- if this were a hotel room, I'd book this hotel! I see tons of storage, comfortable lighting and linens, and pleasing colors... and the features that are Not Me (the wallpaper mural) would be fun style statements to live with for a couple weeks, away from the burden of making it work with my own real stuff.
I love the giant candle -- that is the BEST application of the all-important age-of-orange design principle that the sleek lines must be broken by something rustic.
If nothing else, this site has taught me not to make snap decisions about what I like and dislike in terms of furnishing my apartment. I would have said without pause that I hated mural wallpapers. Not any more. The room is beautiful.
Well done, Enrique.
Veyr nice. BTW are those dressers MALM from IKEA ?
Great looking, but we expected nothing less. :)
I love how color is not just a paint thing here, and is well represented with the enviable artwork over the bed.
DM. Yes, the dressers, bed and bedside tables are all IKEA "Malm".
I really appreciate all the nice comments above and am really enjoying everyone's take on the room. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Y'all flatter too much. I honestly just wanted a cool space tailored specifically for me...
But I have to be honest here. I had pretty much settled with the notion that this room was done, finished, complete--until this morning. When I was flipping through the November issue of US Elle Decor (a shelter mag that has recently been disappointing me in terms of inspiration), my jaw dropped when I saw the spread on photographer Pieter Estersohn's Eastern-inflected Gramercy Park penthouse. I went into design-shock when I saw the custom photo-mural of an Indian palace (taken by the photographer himself) that was installed on 2 adjacent walls of his son's nursery. My eyes rolled into the back of my head and I found myself muttering, "Must. Take. To. Next. Level." So, I guess I'll be plotting out the next incarnation of this room to implement once Spring rolls around... [Oh yeah, I was also thinking, "Must wrangle a hot Latin partner and adorable camera-ready, Gerber-baby child..." But, uh, that's a whole other set of issues.]
It was a Hawaii wall mural selected our lounge at work that somehow reinforced that it was possible to go there....and stay. I'm terrible at home decorating! Your presentation is clean, comfortable and orderly and the splash of color is great. Thanks for sharing and good luck.

Orange is my favorite colour. It makes everything taste better, even in the bedroom!
I think I'm seeing a little peek out onto that glorious Moroccan-inspired patio area he shared with us a while back. And, seems like he had a pretty smokin' kitchen, too. Very nice combination; especially for intimate, informal entertaining.
It's warm, cool, and unexpected all at once. Excellent!
An orange room that's... serene? I wouldn't have thought of it at *all.*
I adore it. And the autumn forest wallpaper. It's kind of surreal to me... "visualize a universe where orange is serene, shoji screens are opulent, and mural wallpaper looks really sophisticated."
I don't love Malm but I think you handled it well since its not center stage.
unbelievably HOT. those trees...
Where did you buy the forest wallpaper? Awesome room!
Hi Ann. LOL. The forest wallpaper is from... Home Depot!! (Shhhh...) But it is readily available online from several e-tailers. Just google "photo mural wallpaper" and you should get several vendor options. I believe that I paid $60-70 for mine. PS It's almost impossible to perfectly match up the image when attempting to align the various panels. So, prepare yourself for a bit of frustration if you DIY.
I have the feeling that the more time you spend in this room, the more you love it.....
I just love the stone !
