apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Flickr Find: Sara's Sleek Home Office Space

060409_desk.jpgIn a small space there's not always a lot of room to bring in a regular sized desk; spreading out papers and magazines is a luxury normally reserved for the dining table. But what we hadn't thought of was using a long, narrow desk. Sara's home office has a nice narrow desk with some colorful walls and prints, and for a refreshing change, black expedit shelves.

060409_desk2.jpgWorking on a laptop we don't need a deep desk to accommodate a monitor. So looking at Sara's home office we're inspired: a long narrow desk could meet our needs without jutting into the room and taking up a lot of space. We also love that from the looks of things Sara was able to fit a filing cabinet underneath her desktop (which she says is from Ikea and looks to us like the Malm occasional table) to add some storage to help keep paperwork clutter to a minimum.

We love the deep aqua color of her walls along with prints from strawberry luna that add some orange and blue to the mix and it's a nice change to see a black expedit shelf instead of the classic white. It's also nice to see shelves that aren't overflowing with things (like our own shelves) with room for plants, tins, books and...space.

Also check out Sara's Etsy Shop filled with great hand printed tea towels, prints, totebags and notebooks.

I love the room! I wish my Expedit was in that black/brown finish... I can't complain though, someone threw away the same style but in white and I took that baby upstairs!

I just realized the wall frames have the tiniest silver metal edge, I thought it was all glass with the clips... but still, where can I find something with that small of an edge?

dunklekatze,
I've seen those frames (or at least extremely similar ones) at Michael's. They had them in black, white, and silver.

I've purchased similar frames but larger at IKEA. That's probably where she got them. I think they were about $15/ea

Love the long skinny desk idea! I'm using my filing cabinets as the legs to my current desk but when I move, I'm doing this!

Love the limited color palette, turquoise, orangey-red, black. Makes it all seem less busy. Wish I had color discipline like that!

There's barely enough room for a laptop - so it's not really a home office.

I did this in my bedroom when I was living with a friend, and was pretty much confined to that one room. When I moved out I used the occasional table as a TV stand (with a 42" plasma). When I move again, I will probably use it as a console. I've definitely gotten my money's worth out of that table. Such a great/versatile piece of furniture.

lovely room.

ChrisGal - an office doesn't necessarily have to mean "computer space". one person's "work" doesn't have to be the same as everyone else's "work".
there's plenty of space to write a letter, pay some bills, etc...

thanks for all the sweet comments! it's our favorite room, too.

the paint i originally chose for the sewing room in my house, but when i moved in with my boyfriend, we decided we liked it so much we wanted to use it in the office. i'm pretty sure the color is 'mirage lake' from behr. i found the aloe plant's pot at a yard sale last year, and the frames were indeed from ikea (good eye, lalizzie). i love all of strawberryluna's work - she has such a great style.

the room totally functions as an office - it's my hub for paying bills and i like to sit there when i do my photo-editing and listing for my etsy shop (i have a 17" macbook pro and it fits perfectly). i do all my screenprinting and shipping at my studio.

Thanks girlscantell, for the paint info. I would never have guessed it's "mirage lake" by looking online, but in person I bet it's different. I love your room!
