We spotted this picture on Flickr after searching for black rooms (we wanted a bit of Halloween inspiration for today). What we found was this amazing black powder room. We actually remember a family member painting their bathroom using this alternating technique and think it's great for a few reasons. More views after the jump.

We love the alternating stripes of satin and flat paint of the same color to create texture on the walls and make the room more interesting. It's one more way paint can help a room out with more than just the color. We also love that they decided to go with colored toilet paper to match the red sink. And you probably didn't catch that the three votives on the wall are holding beta fish!
Here are some other ways paint can be used as more than just a color
I really like the bw towel. Anyone know where that is from?

Coloured toilet paper was super popular 10 years ago but was mostly taken off the shelves because the dyes caused infections and were not very biodegradable. So not healthy and not environment friendly=really not worth it!

Poor fishies.

ugh. the poor fish. bettas should NOT be in something that small contrary to popular belief.
and while stripes are nice, that bathroom reminds me of a dungeon.

Colored TP was very common in the 50's-70's...
..yellow, pink, powder blue, florals...
...it was nearly impossible to get anything in plain white.

This is cool, but it looks like it either belongs in a night club or in Marilyn Manson's house.

There's another example available on my blog, Strange Closets. One of the weekly home tours, Eric and Sean have done a fantastic job in their entry hallway.

That's cruel to the bettas. You need at least 1 gallon per inch of fish, and that includes bettas. It's a myth that it's healthy for them to live in such a confined space.
Sorry to sound like such a zealot, I've had a lot of fish.
Otherwise, I really dig that room.

Years ago, my mom painted the paneling in her dining room using alternating matte and semi glossy paint. This way, it highlighted the paneling in a positive way. The stripes were not regular, she alternated the paint with each "panel".
