You might remember Catherine's hallway from a previous Apartment Therapy post. Leslie from AT, San Francisco highlighted 10 refreshing decor ideas from Catherine's home. While Catherine has since moved (and left her fabulous hallway behind) she hasn't abandoned her functional style. We spotted her IKEA hack bookshelf using sliding chalkboard doors (made out of MDF) and thought--what a great idea!

The difference between the two photos is quite amazing. The first image feels a bit overwhelming but by simply adding the chalkboard doors--the area feels more controlled. The black partitions break up the space which gives the bookshelf added visual appeal. Catherine can now easily slide the doors over an area (especially if that side needs to be hidden from view). Additionally, the chalkboard makes any workspace playful--which we love to incorporate while logging hours.

Wow. This is really amazing! It's hard to believe how different it looks. I'd love to know more about how she attached the chalk boards.

Thanks everyone!
@Lesley: Ikea also provides sliding rails for the Besta System, which are quite easily to handle with other doors, because there are just screwed on the back of the door. I posted the whole thing also on my blog under http://hyggelig.typepad.com/my_weblog/2009/04/ikeahack-schiebet%C3%BCrentafel-vorm-b%C3%BCcherregal.html
It was a very practicable DIY, because our one-and-a-half-year-old daughter loves to paint on the chalkboards while I am working on the computer.

"The difference between the two photos is quite amazing"??? Sorry, I don't see that much difference at all. Although it is a cute idea for your daughter.

I'm in favor of anything you can do to hide clutter and clear away chaos. A few more doors to go...
